How old are your dreads? Yeah, that is one annoying, completely normal thing, for your dreads to look like crap right after washing. When my dreads were new, I had to do some serious palm rolling, and would use my dread tool (from dreadheadhq) to get things back into shape.

I haven't used pure aloe, but have been using knottyboy's aloe tightening gel, and loove it. It works so well, and smells good too.

Wishing you patience and persistence with your dreadz! As you probably already know, they will improve over time!!!

I've heard people just rub the broken aloe right on their locks.

How often are you washing and what kind of soap and technique are you using to wash your hair. I was really gentle when I washed my hair, for over a year, I now enjoy suds, but it was totally worth the wait!

I don't get a ton of exposure to other knotty heads and have always made a point, in the past, to admire them from a distance. Once I finally started looking at other people's hair, I discovered that my frizzies are pretty normal. Some people have more, some less, but overall I notice my won waaaaaay more, because they're on my head. Stand about three feet from the mirror and don't look straight at the top of your head, but at yourself, generally; this is how people see you (kinda!).

After the backcombing our hair is just doing its own thing, and some hair desires more unkempt-ness than other hair. Love your locks as they come! They're babies! You'll develop more of a relationship with them as time goes on- but they're still going to do what they want.

If I ever do a second set (which I'm guessing I will), I will section my hair, not just grab sections. A frustration for many of us, but one vwhich can be overcome.

*shudder*...Louis, I'd not use aloe straight off of the plant, cuz it's gonna make you smell like you stepped out of a locker room! Try breaking a big piece and take a whiff...it'll cross your eyes! This is one of the very few times I'd advise getting a prepared solution, instead of the one right out of nature. Just make sure there are no extra additives that could cause your dreads to unravel.

I use Dr Bronner tea tree shampoo I get a bucket and put water in it I dip my head and then I put the shampoo that diluted it with water then I scrub my head with my fingers and then I leave it there for a second then rinse my hair out with cold water and when I get out I spray my hair with salt water then roll em and then let them air dry....got lots of frizzies and I wash every 3days but I think imma hold off washing longer now cause its getting kinda annoying....is there a better way to wash them and should I scrub?

Hmm, not really scrub, but massage your scalp firmly with your fingertips...this will not only remove dead skin cells, debris and stimulate the circulation, but it'll also help in knotting up the roots if you do it in a circular motion.

*giggle*...there is this wonderful invention called the shower that you might try out...sprays water right on your head and you don't have to hang upside down to do it! ;-)

I'm glad Rebekah pointed-out the pure aloe thing...stinky LOL I use a bottle of aloe vera gel I got from the pharmacy and it works great :)

With regards to post-shower frizzies, that's completely normal, especially for baby dreads...man, you should see my locks after I wash, even when mature, they look like crap LOL...but persevere, it gets better! get the Palm-rolling going. Once they get more mature, I can teach you how to sew-in loose hairs, which will dramatically reduce any frizzies, whether wet or dry. Baby dreads are a pain in the butt, but unfortunately, they gotta do their thing to get the stunning locks in the end :)

Have you tried flipping your head upside down, like you've been doing when you wash? That would give you alot easier access to the dreads underneath and in the back and not be so tiring on your arms...just don't stay like that for too long...we don't want you passing out whilst palm rolling the dreadies! :-D

I used to give my (ex)step-daughter hell about having her hands in her hair all the time...it wasn't dreaded, just rather long and she was always twisting it up and taking it down, over and over, again. Now that I finally have long hair again, after having it short for many, many years, I completely understand...it's always a thing of getting it off your neck, or out of your face, or keeping it from getting caught in the car door...you know, just standard things. ;-)

I'm glad I was corrected about the pure aloe thing! Sorry, guys. That was information I heard in another thread, but hadn't tried..

Nah, not really bad info, it's just that some of the 'pure' aloe that you can buy has additives, which you don't want...fragrance, okay...but polymers or waxes, nope!

Y'know, I've never noticed the smell on smaller aloe plants...it seem that it only manifests when the plant gets very large...I wish I had one so I could test the theory, but my cats decided that my plant was fun to play with and I've not gotten another.
