i'm going to do my absolute best to try and describe what's going here..

my hair is pretty coarse and wavy, so the roots have always matted up a lot- too much. i think i'd not have such a problem if my dreads had more definite edges at the root. when we did them, we sort of just grab chunks of hair. i've been wondering if i should find some way to fix this. maybe if i took them, one at a time, and with a nose hair trimmer (or something) and made more clear lines, then tended the hairs as they grew back? it would take a long time, but i wouldn't want to deal with a ton of loose hairs growing up all over the place.

also, i have a very wide variety of sizes on my head, but i'm beginning to lose the little ones (they're being swallowed up at the roots. did anyone else go through this? what are they going to end up looking like? i'm pretty ok with it, i'm sort of ready for thicker dreads, and the thick ones seem to mat up waaaay better than the thin ones..

i too grabbed chunks and made dreads rather than defining the sections. Started to have hairs in the wrong dreads so i got some small cosmetic scissors and cut those hairs. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Now the hairs that were cut are starting to grow and sticking straight up. They arent dreading and at the moment they are about two inches long. too short to weave into the dread. So it looks really really messy.

In another forum (dreadlockforums.ning.com) they have discussed the best ways to combat these problems. They suggest ripping at the roots in the shower and also once defining those sections, using beads instead of rubberbands.

So dont cut and check out that above link for more advice.

I did something just like you, Kath. The two things that helped me out (okay, maybe three things) -- to get my hair looking 'neat' again, were:

Lock Peppa (from dreadheadhq).. I'd use the powder to help me grasp those teeny hairs together (the ones that were closest together), then twist the little 'group' of hair together 'till they're tight little balls against my scalp. This is to keep ur hair looking 'neat' and tidy as they grow.. When the get long enough, I use dreadhead's 'tool' to kinda sew them back into the nearest dread.

      and

Knottyboy tightening gel.. It smooths down some more of the stubborn little trouble makers.

      ~Good luck with all!~

PS. They explain it better. For the lock peppa --> www.dreadheadhq.com/shop/Lock-Peppa.html

      and

for the tightening gel --> www.knottyboy.com/shop/prod...ening_gel/
