Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 10:09 PMTry going the no 'poo method...washing with diluted baking soda and using diluted apple cider vinegar as a rinse...it'll take your scalp a while to get used to it, but once it does, you can go much longer without having to wash...plus, once the detox period is over, you won't have the cases of the flakies like you get with most shampoos...it balances out the ph level in your skin to where you don't have dandruff or dry, flaky scalp...and no horrible oilies, either...

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 10:40 PMIt's hard with the undreaded part, as it can show the lack of washing ((look oily)) while the rest probably looks/feels fine. Aside from that, a gradual approach could work.. just slowly increasing the time between washings.
How old are your dreads, and what shampoo have u been using? -

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 9:44 AMi dont think the no poo method is for me, now anyways, wouldtry if werent dreaded.
mine are 3 months old.been using dreadhead shampoo and just picked up the knottyboy bar. really like dreadhead but can make my scalp feel really dry. the bar seems a bit more moisturizing.
evreytime i was they are shrinking up like crazy now ! and getting more loopy. i do not remember it happening this fast and crazy with my last set.
im palmrollling them more now when i get a chance but it seems like when they are starting to smooth a bit it time to wash and it starts all over again. -

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 12:53 PMYou can use the no 'poo method, even with dreads...it's really all about the scalp and returning it to it's natural ph level...the dryness and itchies will stop and you won't have any kind of build-up that can gunk up your dreads...

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Fri, May 1, 2009 - 1:36 AMOhh, that wonderful loopy stage! Ughh! I think just going through it must make us grow (inside) somehow.. like a new degree of patience, or of 'letting go' of caring what we look like / what they turn out like. . .
Anyway -- I was using dreadhead shampoo (for over a year), and also found it dried out my hair, which I'm not complaining about, as it's good stuff... But! It seems that knottyboy liquid shampoo leaves my hair with a bit more.. overall softer feeling - and great smell! - which is nice. If you don't mind a shampoo that doesn't contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate (and the big lather that goes along with it!), this may be a good one to try too! :)
The mess I'd come out with after shampooing is what's helped me greatly increase my time between washings (although now is NOTHING like those early days!!!). It's so nice that these things improve with time . . . Keep up the good work, your reward is waiting (ha ha, they probably said the same thing in church last Sunday!) ;p -

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Mon, May 11, 2009 - 7:20 AMBeen using the Lush shampoo bars for about the past 9 months and LOVE them! At one point I was able to go about a month between washings and then I don't know what happened. My scalp went crazy and now I'm back to once a week even though I should cut that down to about every 4 days but I'm too lazy.
Finally after 3 years almost all the lumps and bumps have stretched out. But the first 6-9 months or so everytime I washed they shrank up. Now I think washing them more is helping stretch them out so the lumps and curves are straightening out.

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 1:24 PMYou need to listen to your scalp....this takes some practice......when I need to wash my dreads.....my scalp becomes itchy, red bumps happen, flaky scalp,etc.....I wash mine around 2 times a week.....after washing use some Dr. Miracle's oil.....rub it on your scalp....it smells like cloves and tingles and Stimulates your scalp....and VERY nice treat indeed! As for the the straight-fly-aways as I like to call them....I was told when I twist em down I can work them into the dreads....eventually they will work into the dread....but to have more of a natural look let them just be there....which is the path I took...BUT then I came across this.....they get really long......and I dislike bangs.....and get in the way.....so now I go and give them a trim here and there.....I basically have babybands.....I'm growing to like them now! Hope that helps....Peace-n-Love Sarah

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 2:01 PMYour bangs you can just wash on their own, like in the kitchen sink. As for your dreads, I noticed that once I got past day 3 or 4, my scalp started to feel better...it's just a pain in the ass getting past those couple bad days. -

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 6:18 PMI wash mine MAYBE once a month...and even then rarely use chemicals(liquid dish soap[joy] works great)...your scalp will tell you when its time...your body needs the chance to adapt back to naturally producing oils instead of mass producing them because you keep washing them away....and my dreads dont smell bad nor do i get the breakouts on the scalp that were more common when first starting out...dont be afraid to not wash em..its not dirty...even vidal sassoon(sp) said that normal(undreaded) hair should not be washed more than once every two weeks! ...good luck...why b normal when u can b dreadful. Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 5:32 PMEverybody's scalp responds differently, which I think is something everyone here is getting-at. Your scalp will certainy let you know when it needs a wash. In summer, if I'm working a lot outdoors, I'll generally wash maybe every week or two...but winter (like now) I'm washing like every month or more...
Baby dreads are such a pain in the butt, I've had m 3 times now, and oh man, you never get used to it lol, it always sucks something chronic. Just make sure you use a good quality non-residue shampoo (I wouldn't recommend dish soap, especially to baby dreadheads...they more often than not contain residues...colours and fragrances...but if it's a choice between that and pantene or something, go the dish soap lmao)...
Don;t worry, your scalp WILL adjust, just takes time, patience, and a pretty tam hehehe :P -

Re: how can i extend time between washes ?
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 5:33 PMalso, as Melissa has said, you can wash the bangs on their own, but try not to wash them as frequently as you would if you had no dreads...like the locked sections, the undreaded parts will also start getting used to not being washed so frequently, and will end-uphealthier, and much easier to maintain alongside the dreads :))
