You might have a bit of trouble getting your hair started at that length, but I don't think it's impossible. Make sure you backcomb them really, really well, and prepare yourself to have them sticking out all over the place for a while, cause they will, especially when they start shrinking. And you're probably going to have to do a bit of extra maintenance, but there us really no reason you can't start now if you really want to. Worst case scenario, they come out and you have to wait a few months before starting again.

As far as washing, if you're really concerned, get a pair of cheap pantyhose form a drug store and put them over your head before you wash to keep your dreads from moving, or wash your hair in still water in the tub or sink instead of under the shower. You can wash them whenever you feel you need to, but in the beginning be gentle with them. Any non-residue cleanser will work. You want to stay away from things that'll dry your hair out or stay in your hair. I like Doc Bronner's (which I still use even now that my dreads are gone). You can even use just baking soda and water if you want...your choice. But try to stay away for things with SLS and lots of chemicals and additives.

I'm not going to get into a wax debate, but Knotty Boy sells wax, so of course they want you to use it. You really don't need it. It won;t help your hair dread, it'll just make the hair stick together and look 'neater'.

Cool. Just make sure your dreads are fully dry before you walk around with hats and wraps on all day because if the dreads are still a bit damp - then mold and bacteria will start to grow. I started dreading my hair when it was about 4 - 6 inches long. It is locking up ok. it has come undone at my nape (the hair there is super short still) but once it grows, i will re-backcomb it all. Wearing hats and wraps will teach them to lay down and you will be surprised at how much they will shrink in width and in length.

I was advised to wear those hair rubberbands at the root and at the ends to help prevent my short brand new dreads from untangling. Didn't really need to though. But you may want to consider it if you are really worried. I washed them every 2-3 days because the itch would just drive me crazy. You may experience itch because hair is not used to being sectioned permanently. The nylon is a really good idea for washing but once again - i didnt worry about. Also, you may think sleeping at night will help those babies knot up but it actually does the opposite. Try sleeping with a satin wrap or any wrap for that kind (i just like satin and find it smoothes down loose hairs). Some people use a t-shirt - but i think that is for longer dreads.

We took our time backcombing my hair and it did knot up pretty well. That knottyboy video - they ran through his hair so quickly. We just did nice slow strokes and only let like 1-2 hairs slide down with each stroke. Result was more compact knots and i think this was the most beneficial thing I could have done to dread shorter hair. Mind you - it took 2 weeks but it was worth it. Also, we used a lice comb but it had 2 rows of teeth instead of just one. It worked great!!!

          Hope this helps.

They can lock at that length, as Kath has said, you can band the roots, but you can also just make sure to keep root-rubbing to make sure they keep matting and don't unravel. And yeah, giving them a REALLY good back-combing is essential with them being so short! But it's ot impossible...

Kath: "Also, you may think sleeping at night will help those babies knot up but it actually does the opposite."

            >>> It must depend on hair types...mine dread-up beautifully when I sleep on them, I never ever cover them in bed, and it helps them to mat. Must be a person-to-person thing I guess :)

Must be. If i dont sleep with my wrap on - i have hair everywhere and dreads sticking up all over the place. Mind you I'm a restless sleeper.

Only if you want to. That short hair will eventually dread up.

If you're worried about looking as neat as possible for your job, you might consider cleaning up your neckline...the hairs will dread, but as a way to have dreadies and still look a bit more professional, it's a consideration.

..which is why salons suck LOL

arrghhh my issue with them, is that these people don't have dreads, there are definitely ways of getting around a shorter length and fine hair...dagnamit! You should be here! You'd be dreaded in no time, minus any *necessity* for wax or perms LOL
