i have fine but strong hair.
i have been wanting to put dreads in them but i want to take them out if i look like a freakin nerd in them.

anyway.... has anyone removed or combed out dreads for themselves or another?
how long were they dreaded before you did so?
what did it look like?

i planned on sea salt and back combing to put them in.

I combed my own dreads out...they were in for about a month in a half or so and weren't really coming in the way I wanted them to. Anyway, they were pretty hard and fairly developed ( they had shrunk about 3 inches). I took 4-5 hours combing it out...I just put a shitload of conditioner into my locks and then I patiently combed them out all by myself. During, the last hour I grew really tired and I actually just ripped out A LOT of my hair. (But i have fairly thick hair, so this was no problem for me) I highly recommend a friend or two to help you along. Everyone will remain more calm since they don't have to do as much so there'll probably less frustration and less "ripping" of hair. But can be done and my hair is beautiful, wavy and full of body again!! But honestly, I don't recommend it at all. Just make sure your dreads are put in really well and that you're ready for the committment of having dreads. There's maitenance involved and lots of patience required!! Good luck and tell me how it goes!

yes...i know the whole working on them process and care.
i have been waiting for my hair to grow long enough so i didnt look like i had a head full and sticky outtie stubbies with the whole shrinking thing.

i should just do it and quit worrying.

i had mine in for about 6-8 months when i decided to take mine out. i regrete it everyday but oh well. it took me a weekend to get them all out. It took this long cause im lazy and i have ADD at times so i would just get bored and throw on a tam and go out. my exgirlfriend helped me out towards the end. its actually kinda gross to cause there is mad hair that end up on the floor or on your brush. but it really doesnt hurt. take a shower throw on mad conditioner and it should be back to normal with a couple of washing. just my 2 pesos

I was thinkin about combing mine out too. I'm not sure yet because i don't want to regret it. I have long hair and long dreads that are about 7 months old. Would you reccomend cutting their length them combing them out? I wonder how short i will have to cut them

every time i see a dreaddy i totally regret taking them out. i would think twice about it cause once you take them out you might want to get them again. but then you start to think about how LONG it takes for them to form and the maintanance and patience it takes that you might never do it again.

I have had dreads for 8 months and I'm so "up and down" about them. I am so sick of twisting them and they haven't fully tightened yet. I absolutely love them one day and the next I despise them. I decided that I don't want them anymore. Since they are not that tight, do you think it will be easy to undo them? Do you have any suggestions? I am such a low maintenance person and these dreads are causing me to get ready everyday.. lol... Not cool!

I combed out my first set at arounf the 2.5 years mark. It took 3 or 4 days and a lot of conditioner. The hair was frizzy and limp, but I hear if you grow it and treat it with protien conditioning you can get it back to a nice state to wear loose again. I combed mine out to start a natural set, so I didn't really care too much about it at the time.

I combed my first set out at 8 months of age. Cut my second set (of 3.5 years) from below shoulder length to about 5 inches and combed rest out. Cut my third (and most recent) set at shoulder length after about 1.5's now been 4 months and my hair's doing great - can't even tell I once had locks, despite them being VERY tight and well-maintained. Each time my normally-straight hair looked like a frizzy, ultra-permed afro, and took a week or so for it to settle-down properly, and then a few more weeks to tame back to normal (but that's after having locks for extended periods, not short periods). And like I said, now ya can't even tell i had locks...backcombed locks produce the best results, AND are the easiest to comb-out. I've helped someone comb-out (or attempt to) locks using the crochet method...not good.
