alrighty....so my dreadies just FINALLY were 'started' this weekend...although ive been slowly doing them since sept 5th. heres my prob. I have extrememly frizzy frizzy dreads, and my ends will not lock up at all. i understand the few that i just put in this weekend are not going to, but even the ones from a couple months ago will not stay at the tips.
My question is...does anyone have any tips for the tips :)
I dont want to use wax anymore, i hate how it feels...I use a dreadheadhq shampoo and their locking peppa.... any other products you guys love? natrual, diy, or store ones, throw it at me im hungry for info!!!!
xoxo

Re: help my wispy tips!
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 10:50 AMtake the locking peppa, dip the tip in some... grab the dread about one inch from the end, and rub the little bugger in the palm of your hand clockwise.. till you get tired...
and if all else fails, many moons from now, and they still wont behave, while the rest of the dread is doing well, you can cut off the offensive end... just a lil...
remember.. patience is the key word -

Re: help my wispy tips!
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 3:32 PMYou can always felt, crochet or sew them in once your dreads mature a bit and lock up some more, but right now since they're so new you're not going to have anything to sew them into. Right now palm rubbing is the best bet until your dreads sort themselves out.

Re: help my wispy tips!
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 7:09 PMFrom my experience, simply cutting-off the non-dreaded tip will simply cause more to unravel...
Having very straight hair myself, with my last set of dreads, I had the same problem, the tips just did NOT wanna dread...THIS is what you do...use the rip n pull method as far down the tip as you can get...(you can use Lock peppa is you want, but I never needed it, and my dreads were eventually dreaded to the very tip)...and palm-roll them very very tightly...do this as often as is needed...I often used to sit on public transport and do my tips, or when watching tv, just whenever you find one, do it. I found that after only a few times on each one, making sure they get a nice hard palm-roll, they dreaded-up fine...it's also sped-along by the fact I had quite long dreads (halfway down back), so I would be sleeping on them too...
This method doesn't give you rounded tips though, for that you use the crotchet method, and actually pull those tips back up into the dread...

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 6:56 AMLOL :P
OK It's kinda hard to explain without actually showing you, but I will do my best :)
ok you grab the dread by the tips, pull it apart into a rough half-half from the tips-up, as far up the dread it will go (it will only go up as far as is not dreaded yet)...put the two halves back together, and do it again, but using two different 'halves' of the dread, and do this, using different sections) right down to the very tip of dread. As you do each "rip", it creates more knots up the top of the un-dreaded section...and as you keep doing it, the knots continue to form down and down the length...and make sure you give it a good hard palm-rolling right afterwards (and I often did it a few times after that as well)...
Hope this has made sense :) It is a wonderful dreading method and works so well for tips! :D

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 7:11 AMgot it! Grassy ass!
Does anyone have any good make-yourself scalp stuff? tea tree oil? im gunna try not washing my hair for a couple weeks but still spraying with sea salts at least on the tips(makes my scalp SUUUUUUUUPER dry)
Also....Anyone have any experience with knotty boy conditioning sprays? my dreads and really dry and brittle feeling :( -

Re: help my wispy tips!
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 9:31 AMthe spray isnt bad, i use it sometimes...
i use tea tree oil on my scalp directly where its dry, once or twice a week... with weather getting colder, gonna have to step that up a bit...
there are several things to do... apple cider vinegar, rinse before washing...
ahh, when you wash, use cool to cold water on your head, stimulates blood flow, along with waking you up

Tue, February 17, 2009 - 12:38 PMBaking soda, diluted with water...and diluted apple cider for a rinse...once your scalp and hair get used to it, you'll be amazed at the results!

Re: help my wispy tips!
Mon, November 24, 2008 - 9:35 AMthe wax is not helping you, the more lubricant you have in your hair, the longer (or never) it will be before they actually can lock. patients will pay off. i wouldn't worry bout the tips right now, they're still so young and are the last to lock. if you're having problems with the rest of the dread unravelling, throw a rubberband on at the bottom so the hair can still move but not unravel, and don't leave it on for more than 1 or 2 weeks. try going without any product for a while, they aren't going to actually help, they're more for covering up problems rather than solving them. your tips will naturally be a little wispy, that's not a bad thing. keep your hair clean and try manual locking methods, using your hands rather than product.
oh, and have fun

Re: help my wispy tips!
Tue, February 17, 2009 - 8:25 PMSame here... over 2 yrs and most of my ends are wispy. Some have dreaded themselves into the blunt end, and a few are doing weird double ended snake tongue stuff as they attempt to dread to the end. I just don't worry about it. I've become much less neurotic about trying to make them a certain way. (Not to say I don't spend hours each week weaving in loose ends with a crochet hook to avoid fuzzies!) I guess you have to pick your battles.
