hey! I have noticed the past few months that since my dreads have started to get nice and tight, they are getting WAVY ALL OVER. ALmost all of them have little loops all over. I understand taht dreads arent supposed to be perfect...but it seems like all of them are loopy!
What have I done?
is this something that will go away as they tighten?
Is there something I can do to make them smooth out?

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 7:13 PMhow old are yours ? mine are doing the exact same thing, started a few weeks ago, happens more each time i wash. as a result i have been palm rolling them more and it seems to help, but i hate rolling them ! mine are about 3 months old now and are also starting to shrink up quite a bit in length also which sucks.

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 9:41 PMSounds like sections of your dreads may be lockin-up faster than other sections, producing 'waves'? Have a close look at your dreads...is this what is happening? Or are they tight all over, just wavy? -

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 7:14 AMBecksta's most likely got it. Your hair will lock up unevenly, usually on one side first, creating loops and S-curves. Lots of palm rolling will help, but little lumps and bumps are natural in the tightening process. If they're really bothering you, you can try crocheting or felting some of the loops in, but they'll mostly sort themselves out.

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 9:39 AMSort of. some of them are a little loose around the waves, and some are tight. It's almost like they tightened so fast that pieces just got pushed up. similar to when you run fabric too quickly through a sewing machine.
They are about 8 months old... how often should i be rolling? also, when they are dry (i dont use wax), they are hard to roll bc they just slide around... should i s[ray water on them to get some traction? I'm so lost.

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 11:48 PMHey! Mine did the same thing. I just palm-rolled after washing while they were still a bit wet. And eventually they sort themselves out. This is actually a good sign, although you might not think it now. But it adds texture and shape to form an original dread! Yey! -

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 3:28 AMColleen, I roll mine when they're completely dry, and that works fine for me...make sure you roll them nice and hard, this will help (1) lock them up faster, and (2) help straighten-out those waves in the meantime :)) -

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 5:24 AMThey are doing exactly what they are suppose to be doing. Just be patient, as they continue to lock up the lumps and bumps will even out. Also as the continue to grow eventually the weight of the dread will pull them straighter. -

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 6:49 AMEvery time I have had dreads I have done them every day. Your dreads will let you know when you can lax off a bit...you'll just be able to tell. They will be tighter and less frizzy. -

Re: WAVY DREADS! WHYYYYYY GOD
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 6:55 AMI only palm roll now after they've been wet (shower, swimming, etc.), but find myself "finger-rolling" here & there without thinking about it. -
