It was about 6 months ago I started the neglect method (for the fourth time..) this time hoping for it to turn out properly. Previous times my hair either didn't lock up and the last time I decided I didn't like them. So I combed and pulled them out. But I really hate the time it takes keeping my hair untangled so I gave dreads another shot. Everything seemed like it was going great, but I didn't know where to buy bands to keep them from joing together(read: lazy). My hair turned out awfully, I've been trying to comb it out for about two months, I've gotten about 5 dreads out (one of them was this absolute monster) as well as all the ends are untangled. However, the roots are matted to hell.
My hair is seperated into 4 sections, 2 at either side on the front that are untangled, and 2 at the back that are two giant matted logs, splaying out into what would have been different dreads. This is both very painful and looks very stupid (think matted pigtails haha). I've been combing and drenching it in conditioner just about every other day with some very slow results. What can I do to hurry this up? My hair is long (way down my chest) and curly. The curls have knotted together, making this a hard job for a comb - ive been using a nail to pull it apart. Cutting my hair isnt an option, please help?

Re: Dreads turned out very badly, unknotting?

Hard to say. You may be able to cut the mats into sections, but seeing pictures will help a lot.

Tue, July 14, 2009 - 2:16 PMare you starting at the ends when you brush? i would condition and brush every day, i think. maybe try baby oil, but that's really hard to wash out, so only put it on the ends (or the bottom of the knot), where you're working.
this is how it goes with the neglect method; from what i can tell from my friends who've done it, it takes far more patience than other methods, because your hair is going to do whatever it wants when you leave it alone.
good luck! -

You can see a the ends are free, although they only ever really matted a little bit. The problem with a lot of it is that the curls have knotted in a hook shape, so I have to pull them through with a nail. Any other good techniques for untangling? I'm sure someone here has taken a lock out.. hopefully lol. What are (were) the chances of these seperating on their own if I continued to neglect it? Also any good ways of getting the oil on just the hair rather than all over my clothes/house? Thanks.
The left side of my head hurts so much I cant sleep on my left side :| -

Re: Dreads turned out very badly, unknotting?
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 6:58 AMIt's hard to say. I only dealt with this once - she had left her hair braided all summer and when she took out the braids, all the hair knotted up. It took us - several people working in shifts pouring on conditioners & oils, and combing like crazy - almost a week straight to get it back to normal.
Yours, though, may be easier for several reasons. Prime reason being you only need to get the mats away from your scalp so it isn;t painful.
Personally, I'd probably start combing from the roots out towards the ends just to give your hair enough "breathing room" so it doesn;t hurt. Then I'd use twisty-ties to section your hair. Then I'd cut straight out to form the dread-lock sections.
But that's just me. I wouldn;t recommend you do anything (other than combing out from the roots to ease the pain) until several others here give their recommendations. Most here know a LOT more than I do and have had a lot more experience.
One last bit: I would not recommend the neglect method. I've seen it work wonderfully, but only on folks with very short hair (the hair tends to naturally section into small chunks and dreads beautifully & naturally as it grows long), but I've chatted with a lot of folks who started with long hair and had neglect-method disasters. Instead, I'd recommend getting it started (sectioned and help along the matting/locking process) and then letting it go on it's own from there.
