Alright, so two of my dreads started to get a little thin in certain spots but i didn't think it was a big deal. Then i got out of the pool one day to find that one of them broke off at the weak point. I don't want the same thing to happen to the other one so please help. And any ideas on what to do about the short one? It's a bit large so i don't think i want to combine it.
Thank you
Thank you

Re: Weak Points.
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 5:10 AMMake a little dread out of the end, wait a month, then sew the old dread back on.
Several ways to strengthen the remaining thin dread...including folding it over & sewing. -

Re: Weak Points.
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:18 AMI don't have the old piece it got lost in the pool. (That should be fun for the cleaning crew.) So i just might be screwed. but there is about six inches of the old dread left. It just looks weird mixed in with the long pieces and makes me believe i'll have to wear my hair up for the next six months. -

Re: Weak Points.
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 11:07 AMYou could get some extension strips from a beauty supply and make a dread out of them and sew it on to the end...just look for some as close to your natural colour as possible...I know quite a few belly dancers that make fake dreads to wear on occasion when they dance...lots of tuts on how to make them on the belly dance tribes and they end up looking quite awesome, not like a baby dread... -

Re: Weak Points.
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 11:09 AMOne other thing...
If you're gonna do alot of swimming in a pool, I'd recommend making sure your hair is secured while you swim and be sure to rinse the immortal hell out of it when you get out...the chlorine weakens your hair, so you want to get as much of it out as possible... -

Re: Weak Points.
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 5:25 PMhahahah I would LOVE to see the cleaners come across that! :P
lol David cheers :) xx
I reckon Rebekah's on the money with this one...a fake dread, or alternatively, if you have any mates with dreads...? I have a few old leftover dreads that I've given to friends to sew-in to their own.
Chlorine ewww I never go swimming in it with dreads...or at least keep hair out of it...also seems to e a really hard smell to get rid of, despite lotsa washing :s
But in general, what you gotta do, is keep on your locks...KNOW THEM. When you see a lock that is starting to thin in a section, take care of it asap, like David said, fold-over and sew it back onto itself...or add something to strengthen it, like getting some yarn or thread the same colour as your hair, and thread it thru the lock up n down over and over, making sure the thread is well-connected to either side of the good parts of your lock. (i.e. make sure you attach whatever you're using at least an inch or two ABOVE the thinning section. Only do this if it's just starting...if it's already thinned, fold-over and sew).
I'm hoping this is making sense, I just got out of bed LMAO :P -

Re: Weak Points.
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 2:36 PMI got the hair extension in. Any ideas on how to make a new dread out of a hair extension? I just have some locking pepper lying around and i don't want it to come loose during two a days under my helmet. -

Re: Weak Points.
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 3:29 PMAsk the same thing here, Graham...alot of dancers that make dreads to wear just for dancing and someone can point you in the right direction...don't worry, they're all very friendly! :-D
