Hi guys,
I got my dreads on friday last week - 7 hours of hell! But it's finally done. I'd like to say I'm happy with them, but.... I have to keep them tied up, as they're still very waxy and VERY itchy, it's driving me nuts, I can't even sleep properly. I'm desperate to wash my scalp, and when I wear them down they stick out and generally look a bit of a mess. I know, I know, it takes patience, and it's only the 5th day I've had them, but I think I'm going to have to give my scalp a rinse later because I can't stop myself scratching and it's getting sore!! I guess I'm a little worried that mine still feel/look kinda unpleasant, considering some people's seem to look amazing right away... I mean, my hair was quite long when I had it done (it reached the bottom of my boobs) and the hairdresser used more than a whole 4oz tub of knotty boy wax!!
The other thing I'm worried about is that she backcombed my dreadlocks but then crocheted them through the root on each one, and then a few times along the length of each... I've been reading that you're not meant to crochet through the root because it won't lock properly or something?! And I'm going to have knots in them forever...?!
ARGH!!!
I guess I'm looking for some advice or maybe just some friendly comments to cheer me up?? *sigh* -_-
Thanks x

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Tue, August 26, 2008 - 4:41 AMSomeone with more experience can provide better info than me, but my first guess is that you can - and probably should - wash them. At least enough to get rid of the wax. Wax doesn't help - actually slows the locking process. You might try some Knotty Boy Peppermint Cooling Spray. Good stuff.
Yes....patience..... -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Tue, August 26, 2008 - 6:14 AMI agree, please do wash that wax out. It's really not going to help you at all. If you're uncomfortable having your hair under a shower head, fill the tub with hot water and gently soak them and rinse them in still water. If they're backcombed well they're not going to come out. I know you're uncomfortable, but having them tied up isn't going to help them lock up at all either. Hopefully washing them will help you be more comfortable, but it's gonna take a bit of washing before all that wax comes out. Also, make sure you wash your head regularly. A lot of the itching is from your scalp complaining. Assuming you washed more frequently and brushed your hair daily before hand, your scalp is used to more stimulus. It'll get over it, but you might want to find something that you can massage your scalp with to help with the itchies. (Also, when you wash, try rinsing in icy cold water for a few minutes, this helps a lot too.)
As far as the crochet goes, I don't know much about it, as I've never done it. but I know people put in dreads that way, so it shouldn't hurt that much unless you keep doing it over and over again. What's done is done, and you hair will lock slowly but surely as long as you keep it clean and take care of it.

Tue, August 26, 2008 - 6:26 AMThank you Laa, that was really helpful - I'll give them some TLC as soon as I'm home from work tonight, can hardly wait! Once I've washed them, I'll leave them down, and I'll try and resist the urge to tie them up tomorrow too. -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 3:29 AMOk, so here's an update...
Last night I gave my head a little rinse in a bath of hot water and rubbed some special dreads shampoo with tea tree etc, onto my scalp. Then I spent forever palmrolling them and trying to neaten them up a bit... took 4 hours of TLC!
A lot of wax came out in the bath but there's still a lot more in them; I can tell because the dreads were really gross and white and flaky as they were drying. They're not quite as bad as before but they're still really quite sticky and pretty stiff. Not very nice to touch or even to look at! Also, where the hairdresser crocheted each dread through itself in various places, it's left bumps that are easy to feel and create kinks especially at the ends. :(
I know I'm not meant to be washing them very often while they're so new but does anyone know if I can keep dunking them in hot water every day or 2 to try and get rid of the excess wax? Of course I'll keep palmrolling and rewaxing any little fuzzy bits or ends if they really need it... I just want to make sure that I'm not going to ruin my dreads trying to get the wax out! -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 5:39 AMI think, (don't know from personal experience) but I think you should be ok dipping them in the hot water.
Your experience sounds very much like mine....
Itched like hell the first week until I washed because my scalp was used to being washed everyday. Didn't care for the wax and only used it once or twice more after my dreads where initially done. Used the wax mainly to control the frizz and new growth.
They started shrinking alot after I started washing regularly. Finally got to the point I could go an entire month without washing but am now back to once or twice a week.
Mine looked bad for about 6-9 months...lots of lumps and bumps and weird "S" shapes...plus they got really really short. But they were just doing what they were suppose to be. Getting hard and locked up.
Now it's 2 1/2 years later. My length has come back, they are getting straighter everyday and while I have always loved them. I love them more now!!!! -

Thu, August 28, 2008 - 5:25 AMThanks for the reply Lee Ann :) Sounds like you had a bit of a nightmare with yours too, but I'm glad it's all worked out well for you and that you love them now! Hopefully I'll get there in the end too!

Thu, August 28, 2008 - 6:24 AMHere are some links that might be helpful for you...
www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml
www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml
The first link contains memorable entries about wax (including some about how to remove it) and the second are recipes for deep cleaning formulas.
Consensus seems to be soaking your dreads in the hottest water you can (boiling if you can handle it, but not the scalp of course) and then a deep cleaning to get the scalp. It's so important to get that wax out of the center of the dreads. Someone recommended dish soap as well. Really as long as you're gentle with them you can wash them as often as you want, but it's going to be a lot of work because you should palm roll them immediately after.
As far as crochet goes, I have heard that it can cause bumps and irregularity. You can probably palm roll a lot of these out with time. Be careful though, if you keep going down the crochet maintenance route, and then decided to stop, you will be able to see the place in your dreads where you changed maintenance styles.
Best of luck! -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Mon, September 1, 2008 - 3:25 AMHi Laa, thanks very much for the reply.
I've washed my dreads a few times in dish soap now and it's worked very well, the wax isn't completely gone but it is a LOT better than it was, it doesn't feel gross to touch them any more!
The problem is that the washing has loosened them up. This wouldn't matter as I should be able to just rebackcomb it, but for some reason that I can't quite fathom, my devil-woman of a hairdresser has basically knotted each dread about 5 times along the length of each by pulling them through themselves, if you catch my drift... This has left me with sections of hair that have come loose and are pretty much straight, but they're between 2 knots, one on either end, so I can't rebackcomb them - argh! I'm not sure what to do! My hair still looks like a mess if I'm honest, so much so that I can't even wear it down.
I've got a girl who's meant to be looking at my hair sometime soon (fingers crossed) so hopefully she can help rescue them, but in the meantime I have no idea what to do about my little babies. I guess I'm worried they can't be saved.. :(
I'll try and post a picture a little later so you guys can see what I mean!

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 1:53 PMWhoever did your dreads used WAY too much wax. Wax can help as the dreads are more formed or it can hinder the process big time. I'm with everyone that says that wax isn't going to help here. I know you said some of it is still in there after washing. I would just wash again after three or four days (maybe longer if the dreads are really delicate) and try to get that stuff outta there. If you are going to use wax in the future, use very VERY little... like half the size of a pea. In the beginning I would try to stay away from it as much as possible though. Good luck on your dready journey! -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 5:29 AMHi Heather,
Yep, I've finally realised this - far too much wax! Yuck!!! What was she thinking. I'm never going back to that salon. Last night I realised I could scrape wax off each dread if I ran my fingers down them, so out of sheer desperation I actually -grimace- washed my hair with fairy washing up liquid... and, actually, it is a lot better! The wax isn't completely gone, but a fair bit of it is and my hair is much less sticky! On the other hand, it's made them rather fuzzy and they need tidying up so I'm going to go to town later and get a little crochet hook to neaten them up a bit. Either way, it's so much better than how they were. I know it's probably awful for my hair though and I won't be making a habit of it; I just had to to try and get some of the wax out because the hot water and shampoo I have was no help whatsoever. :)

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 1:15 PMHey! I just got my dreads maybe a week and a half ago. I didn't have much problems with the wax.. but I put it on myself and I used less than a dab on each one. What I wanted to tell you is that when I washed my dreads, I was told that if you put nylon on your head (yes it feels really dumb) and then wash your hair as you normally would with the nylon on it helps keep the dreads intact.
I have washed my hair once and it did work really really well. I am planning on washing them again tonight, and then tomorrow do some serious palm rolling and using a smidgen of wax on each one to keep the hair on the right dread. (I signed a friend up to help me.)
Here is alot of info..

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 7:52 PMI've only had my dreads for a little over three weeks, and let me assure you that the itching will get better! HANG IN THERE!
If you're only five days in... don't wash them. Don't get them wet.
Seriously. Please.
Just tough it out for a few more days... and then have at it.
I washed mine for the first time after my first eight days and they were a hot mess when they dried. I had to really work on them a lot just to get back what tightness and neatness they already had. I've been looking everywhere for some sort of solution to the itchy scalp (that won't destroy the locks) but I haven't had any luck thus far.
If you have the Knotty Boy bar shampoo... trust me, you'll feel SO much better after that first wash. It really helps a lot with the dryness and irritation. Mine still get to itching- badly- but it's not nearly as frequent now as it was just two weeks ago.
I know nothing at all about crocheting the roots, though...
If I find out anything legitimate, I'll tell you what I know.
Good luck!

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 1:44 PMWOW!!! It amazes me what some hairdressers do...I'm really starting to think you should be licensed or something, have some kinda proper qualifications to do dreadlocks...I mean, you go to a 'professional' assuming they know what they're doing lol!
As has already been stated by the other guys, yeah get rid of that wax! I used wax on my first set of dreads (now on set 3), and it really hindered the dreading process...for hair to dread, it needs to be able to move freely, and lock individual hairs together, but wax holds everything static. I have sucessfully dreaded my dead-straight hair twice now, without the need for it...it just requires a lot of patience and loving care to dread...
The itchies are something that will diminish over time, but whilst your dreads are still quite new, you scalp is really having a hard time adjusting to it all...but it will adjust! Whomever came up with the idea that newbie dreads shouldn't be washed, really should be shot...newbie dreads are the ones that actually require regular washing...your hair needs to be clean to dread! However, unlike with older locks, you do have to be careful...like these guys have said, over a bathtub is great for that...gentle rinsing...I used to use Dreadhead Shampoo in these early stages too...I'd make a watery solution with the stuff in a bottle and just pour it over my scalp and rinse with the shower head on low. I did have to do some hardcore maintenence afterwards, but having them clean hastened their maturation.
I too am a little concerned about your hairdresser's on-off crocheting method...I mean, if ya gonna crochet dreads (an I'm not a fan of the method, to be honest, they're not actually "dreading" the hair), you do them the whole length, not 'here and there"...Can I ask, what kind of hair do you have? straight? wavy? curly?
Mannnn I so need to open-up a dreading salon...have heard so many horror stories about people getting their dreads done by "professionals" who have no idea what they're doing....ugghhhh
But you came to the right place Ashley lol....and it's lovely to meet another dreadhead :)) xx -

Re: new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 7:28 PMOK and I just had another idea...you mentioned that you've been keeping them tied-back...I find, even with mature dreads, I get a slightly itchy scalp (and a little more dandruff than usual) when mine are always tied-back...especially when pulled-back too tight...try keeping them out more often (and I understand this will be kinda gross until you get all the wax out lol)...and if you do have to tie them back, try not to pull them back too tight, this causes scalp dryness and will eventually cause dandruff, which is a real bitch with dreads :P
