Hi, my name is Kath and I am new to dreadlocks - my babies are 24 days old today! I am also new to this tribe and thought i would say hi and ask for some advice.

I decided to go ahead and fulfil a dream I have had for a long time - i decided to get dreads. So, i decided to do them myself using the backcombing method. I ended up using knottyboy wax to help with the process and since then, have read many comments about wax, I have since stopped using the wax.

Currently I am spending well in excess of 10 hours a week maintaining my babies. I am not using any products other than a recipe for a homemade locking accelerator that i stumbled across which i only use once a week anyway (lemon juice, water, seasalt, rosemary and tea tree oil)

The past week however, I have lost around an inch and a half of length. This is good isn't it? I really dont know what to expect over the next few months, so any tips and/or advice would be much appreciated. Also if anyone could let me know just how they are looking for their age - I would be ever so greatful.

Thanks.

First off, kudos for doing them yourself. second, double kudos for ditching the wax. I checked out your pics, and while i cant see them that well in the pics, as far as i can tell, they are looking great. just keep up that maintainance and be patient. Keep them clean and they will turn out beautiful.

    Welcome Kath! :D

They are looking really good for only 24 days! Well done!! :D It is completely natural for you to be losing length as they start to tighten...so don;t worry about that...they're looking great, keep-up the good work :))

All I'll say, is be careful about using too much essential oil, this can make your dreads greasy and hinder the locking process (particularly important in the first couple months). Keep the dreads clean and dry (this means washing and palm-rolling etc)...try not to wear them 'up' all the time...this can cause roots to 'set' in funny directions.

But it looks like you're doing an amazing job as it is! very impressive! :)))

Thankyou so much for your comments and advice. It is so hard to find people to talk to in my area as noone local has dreadlocks and the internet is the only place where i can find information. I spent weeks researching on the net but there comes a time when you just dont know what to believe anymore. So many misconceptions out there and misleading information.

It was such a relief when I stumbled across this site. All I can say is Thankyou!!!
