Does anybody have anytips or suggestions about dread extensions. I am considering getting my locks done until they grow out. Just wondering about stuff like Do they really look real? Are they really permanent? Do they damage your natural dreads? And any other suggestions anybody has to offer is appreciated...Blessings

Re: Dread Extensions???
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 4:45 AMPersonally, I know nothing of commercial extensions, but there was a lady subbed to this tribe a while back who sells extensions.
That said, I have a couple of extra locks made from hair taken from my wife's comb. I took her (blonde!) hair, tangled it together, soaked it in salt water, let it dry in the sun, added some Knotty Boy tightening gel, and....presto! I only have one added right now, but we're actually using another today to strengthen the middle of a long lock that was damaged by weaving it in.
I have a couple more that I'll probably use down the line as extensions.
So...got any friends or a significant other whose hair you can use?

Re: Dread Extensions???
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 5:53 AMI'm with David, in knowing nothing about commercial extensions, HOWEVER...I'm on my third set of Dreads now, and have had great success in sewing-in old dreads to both my own hair, and to friends' 'new' dreadlocks...They have always been our own previous dreads that have been sewn-in, eliminating the issues of "looking fake", but, I guess, if you can find someone with similar hair to your own, or extensions that don't "look" fake, you shouldn't really have an issue... -

Re: Dread Extensions???
Tue, December 23, 2008 - 9:29 AMwell, I lstart by making sure I have loose tips...like these current baby dreads, I'm not bothering to dread the tips at all...
I start by doing my best to "ball" the extension head, where it's gonna attach to the new dread, give the thread something to hold onto...I then secure the thread into the extension, by first sewing down inside the length, maybe about 2 inches or so, and bring the needle out of the dread. I then insert the needle back inside the dread and sew back up again...this ensures the thread ain't gonna just slip out and have your extension fall-off. I then attach it to the newbie dread with a small connecting stitch and knot, making sure that the two are held VERY close together, and then do the same length-thing with the newbie dread...so they both have been threaded-up inside...THEN I do this a stack of times, at varying lengths throughout the new long lock. second-last step is to do a few smaller stitches around the circumference of the lock's connecting point, to really make sure they connect properly. THEN, last step is to use a wool needle, and thread-in the loose bits from the newbie dread, right down into the extension. Then I usually chuck a bead over the join (not that it's usually very noticeable, but to add some strength), or add a cotton binding...
After time, and this is NUTS, I have found that the new half of the dread actually starts to "suck-up" some of the hairs from within the older section, like, from inside of the older dread, and essentially strengthens the join itself!
Hope I explained this well-enough for u to understand LOL I guess it's a good thing I dun write manuals for a living LOL :P

Re: Dread Extensions???
Tue, December 23, 2008 - 9:59 PMNo, I ave always just used regular sewing cotton...match it as close to your hair colour as you can, and keep in mind even if it's a smidge lighter than your hair colour, it WILL get darker over time, with dirt and age LOL :P Oh yeah, and I double the cotton over, using double, rather than a single strand...give it some more strength :)
