Hi guys and gals. For the past few weeks I have been forming some Dreads and while they seem to go alright, after I wash my hair most of it falls out. How long should I wait to wash the first time? and what can I do to keep it from looking too oily? I have fairly wavy hair and it gets oily after 2-3 days so that presents a problem. Some stuff I have read suggested washing my hair with baking soda? would love some input on that.
I want to grow them as natural as possible, maybe some backcombing here and there to keep the ends together.
Any help would be awesome, as I have been wanting dreads since I was four-teen years old.

OK - it's a myth that you gotta wait months and months before washing the first time. Oily hair don't dread properly (if at all). You gotta keep baby locks clean and free from residues...which leads to my next question - what are you washing with at the moment? I've tried the Baking Soda but it actually de-matts some of my roots, which is very frustrating, but it works great for others (you combine baking soda with water to form a paste - or a liquid if you wish - some use Apple cider vinegar in the mix too). I prefer dreadhead HQ Shampoo, gives me great knots, as I have naturally oily hair, it really dries it out and gets it matting, but not so dry that it causes any breakage. The length of time between a wash and oiliness will get longer as you wash less - although this is frustrating in the early stages, it will pass...and then you wash when your hair and scalp tell you to. -

Re: New to tribe/dreads..looking for help
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:27 PMWell I have been using just a regular burts bees shampoo, no conditioner though. I will try the baking soda soon as it sounds like an easy way, and I might end up using some sort of shampoo for dreads. Where would the best place to buy it online be? I live in USA so keep that in mind. I actually found a picture of some dreads I really like (they are on a girl but whatever haha :P ) here's a link www.flickr.com/photos/uop...3947777494/ something like that is what I'm going for.

Sat, October 3, 2009 - 4:32 PMBeksta! *glomp* Where the heck you been, girl? Missed you around here!
A bit of a word about the BS/ACV thing...unless you want to watch your hair bubble, I'd not mix the two together...it won't hurt anything, but it's kinda freaky, just the same...best to do a diluted BS, rinse, then use the diluted ACV...but even just using the ACV after shampooing will help...it rinses out any remaining shampoo and closes the cuticle of the hair...gives it a shine and a closed cuticle makes for a stronger hair strand...:-) -

Marcus - I use dreadhead, which you can get off their website, on ebay, and a billion other places lol but as long as you're using something residue-free, you should be good :) Those are some nice locks (the pic), looks like they been doing some crocheting *beksta shuts her mouth* hahah\
Rebekah - yeah, been dealing with some issues, not been having so great a time :( You in AU yet???
