I think the "perm" Lola referring to is a relaxer, used to make her hair straight. So, it would inhibit the dreading process some, but I think the extra length is worth it.

Re: the rip n pull method...this will give you the pointy ends, like mine....(the rounded ends I always recommend sewing back into the dread with a wool needle).
You won't need to do this method regularly, but you will know when you will, anytime you have some tips unravelling, do it. Won't need to be done every day. With my dead-straight hair, I generally only need to do it maybe 3-4 times, maybe once a week, making sure to give those tips a really hard palm-roll afterwards, and then they're dreaded and I don't have to do them again. So it takes me about a month to achieve them perfectly dreaded-up, doing them once a week.

OK cool, I have dead-straight hair, but the fact you got some leftover perm left will work well in your dreading-favour lol

ok the rip n pull method. Take one of your dreads in both hands, hold by the tip in both hands. seperate the tip into two sections (doesn't have to be neat), and pull it hard, like your pulling your dreadlock into two dreadlocks. Put the sections back together, and do the rip again, but using two different sections. Do this over and over until you reach the bottom of the dread. This method creates knots from top to bottom of dread. Give a nice hard palm-rolling afterwards.

Beksta, just checked and I've actually had my dreads only since May 1st...so that's exactly One month 2wks and 2 days. My God, I could swear that I had them much longer than that.....ahhhhhhhhhh. Ok back to ur questns. At first, I was washing/waxing once a week and then palm rolling practically everyday. By the end of the 3rd wk, stopped the wax and would just wash and palm roll. Used Dread butta every time it looked dry. Then, 10 days ago, I used Yarn and did 2 strand twists cos I heard it helps dread hair. Boy was I wrong! So now, as u all have advised, plan to take down the yarn this wkend!

as far as I'm concerned, crocheted dreads are not dreadlocks. They are not matted hair. And they certainly look different. You can spot someone who's crocheted instead of let their hair mat-up. And whichever method you choose, you;d have to stick to it, cos you'd be able to see the diference in the two methods.

I'd stick with waiting and actually "dreadlocking" rather than crocheting. Don't stress with your baby dreads...I've had them 3 times now, and they really are a bitch lol...but it DOES get better! How old are they now? Exactly what are you doing atm for maintenance?

Back with yet another question. Are crotchet dreads the same as Interlocking dreads? I'm thinking yet again of a 'quick' solution to my baby dreads. A few people advised I should go to an expert at least once...so I think I should take that route. I spoke to the lady today and she said the neatest and quickest way would be to crotchet the dreads. My only worry is what happens with the new growth...do i continue to palmroll the new growth or keep on with the crotchet method.............and would it be uniform to the rest of the crotchet dread......or u don't palmroll? Basically, dear friends of mine..............should I or shouldn't? I know I worry too much and may b a bit vane over all this.........but hey, I have good advisers here......LOL.
