How Often do you Wash?

Now that my dreads are getting longer, I'm getting lazier and just can't make myself wash 'em as often as they probably need. It's so nice to just hop in the shower, scrub my body and hop back out in about 10 mins as opposed to a 1/2 hour + that it takes when I have to wash the babies...plus the drying time.

The most I have ever washed is once a week Lee...although if my scalp doesn't need washing, I can often go much longer...I'm sitting on 2 weeks at the moment, and during winter, when I get less dandruff (cos it's not as cold and therefore my scalp doesn't get all sweaty to start producing it) I can often go a month or so...I just do them when they need it...but DAMN cold rinsing in aussie summer....*drooool* it's practically an orgasmic experience LMAO

Kath i'm in Victoria, about an hour's drive from Melbourne...Bendigo is the largest of my state's Country 'cities'...

Nicole...it's damn good isn't it? Although I hate the hassle of having to let them dry (they stay damp for hours), and the actual having to wash them, I love just standing under the shower letting the cold water run over my scalp...p.s. If you haven't been doing that, do it. Run cold water over your scalp ta the very end to stimulate blood blow, helps prevent/lessendandruff...and just feels plain awesome :P

I agree....as much as I hate to wash I do LOVE the way it feels when I'm doing it. Also, try the microfiber towel..it's totally awesome in helping them dry faster.

That's a good idea, I will! I've been having some issues recently with towels having little bitties that end-up in my dreads and I gotta extract LOL Microfibre sounds like a plan! Thanks :D xx

something that helps with the drying is a home hair dryer. you plug it in and put it over your head like a shower cap and it dries your hair while you do whatever else it is you wanna do. great if you wanna go swimming, get a quick wash or dry, or just not be wet for hours :P

I sure this is unusual but I was my hair probably like twice a week sometimes three times a week. It depends how itchy and flaky my scalp feels like getting that week. I only wish I could go a full week without washing but that has never been the case. Even if i use dandruff shampoos by the third day or so those little white flakies start to apear. I spend soooo much time washing and drying my hair that I never have time to do a little maintaince.

You might consider using henna on your hair...it cures the flakies and you get the added benefit of lovely henna colour...plus it's just good for your hair...will make it so much healthier cuz it bonds with the keratin in each hair strand and makes it more resistant to breakage...and you can use it as often as you like...

What shampoos are you using? I had that problem when I was using Knotty Boy...I would scrape my scalp prior to a wash, scrub it good in the shower, and by the third day it'd all be back again, and even stock-standard dandruff shampoos wouldn't help (plus they did some damage to dreads)...problem was rectified with dreadhead HQ Shampoo...you may be using a shampoo that your scalp disagrees with...?

i too wash about twice a week. i am using dreadhead shampoo and while i like it it doesnt seem to make a diff with how often i need to wash due to my scalp. i think it just NEEDs to be washed often personally, though i wish it didnt since the drying can be time consuming and they are super frizzy the first day since they are babies. i did wash just as oftent hough with previous set.

Anybody here tried the 'no poo' method for washing your hair? It takes a bit of a detox period, but once you adjust...no chance for build up and healthier hair and scalp, too...

Just tried the baking soda/acv on Wed. and loving it!!!!!!!!! Normally by now I would be scratching like a dog with fleas but here it is 5 days later and my scalp still feels great. I do have a few flakes but they don't itch so I just leave them alone.

I might have to think about that at some point, Im currently going crazy! Its winding me up and Im soooo close to taking these dreads out! The kids are driving me nuts, Ive got coursework and a treatment to do tonight and at the back of my mind Im all 'gotta sort the roots/tips/'splitting'/etc'

Im going for a run tomorrow morning bright and early so I will scrub them when I get back so pointless washing them today but jesus the dandruff is getting on my nerves! Im using dreadheadhq shampoo and it obv disagrees with my scalp but Im skint for a couple of weeks and really dont know what shampoo I should try next anyway! Aargh what a day Im having roll on bedtime! ;)

That's the great thing about the BS/ACV...most of us always have some of both in the house...and it's cheap as chips!

If you do start out on it...and this is for other's, too...don't give up if you reach a period where you think it's not working...there IS that detox phase and it can take anywhere from 3-4 months for your hair and scalp to get used to not having all those nasty detergents in it anymore...but if you stay with it, you will be more than happy that you did!!!

i wash twice a week. Always have. Use an anti reside shampoo. I also condition my dreads once a month or so. But they've been on my head for almost 4 years now. [shrug] I'm an advocate of washing dreads. I can't stand dreads that have that oily smell of not clean..i can't stand people who have horrid dreads and don't know why when the obvious solution is that they should be washed more..but thats me. It works for me to wash them more than most people with dreads do, and my dreads are lovely and thank me for it^-^
