I agree with Nicole to let your hair grow a bit, the way i look at it, is there will be about an inch of undreaded hair at the root, a good 1/2 inch to an inch at the tip leaving only 1&1/2 - 2 inches of dreaded hair.

I started mine at about 5-6 inches and and reckon it would take a lot more work to keep those knots in dreads shorter than that length. You would probably need to use rubberbands which i dont like because I think they make it harder for hair to dread up at the roots and tips. hypocrite aren't I? I currently have rubberbands in at my roots but only for a week. My dreads needed to be taught to separate a bit right at the scalp so i banded them. Driving down the road in the car, i stuck my head out like a dog. That cool breeze on my scalp almost made me hit the big 'o'!!! oops I'm going completely off subject :p

Any way, they say dreads started in shorter hair end up better but I would wait till it gets to about 5-6 inches. Then, you have to wait and wait and wait for it to get long enough to do anything with. Very frustrating because they poke you in the eyeball and when you sleep they fall down your face and you think its a mouse tail (probably just me paranoid with mice atm) and you cant tie them up all pretty like and the only way to keep them out of your face is with a headband - which i fouind makes my scalp hot and itchy.

oooh I'm obviously in a complaining mood. But these are all factors you need to consider.
