I'm in the process of getting dreadlocks by backcombing and only a little wax here and there, but I've been thinking about what products are going to help the process along. Has anyone tried the dread butta? Is it any good? Also, can it be used alongside KB gel? I've heard the gel dries dreads out, but the butta is meant to do the opposite so could it be used to cancel that out (while letting the gel still work)?

Re: DreadheadHQ Dread Butta and Knotty Boy Tightening Gel
Wed, April 15, 2009 - 5:06 AMI've never used the DH-HQ Butta, but I have used the Tightening Gel. Good stuff. I didn't have any problem with it drying anything out, but then I only use a little. Not sure if it really tightens anything, though....just tames wild hairs and smells real good.
Back-comb good, wax bad. Grunt, grunt...

Re: DreadheadHQ Dread Butta and Knotty Boy Tightening Gel
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 10:28 PMI've tried, and like both of those products, but I believe they only recommend the butta for more mature locks.
Although many people don't like wax, it worked great for me (how's it going for you?). I used it for my first year, and it really did help my hair to look better while it was locking up, and it did lock up nicely without leaving any crap inside my dreads (I've cut many of 'em and checked out the insides while I was at it)..
..but that's just my 2 cents.
Best of luck with your new lil' babies!! :)

Re: DreadheadHQ Dread Butta and Knotty Boy Tightening Gel
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 7:59 AMThe wax seems to be going fine with me. I have a lot of loose hair so it's helpful to keep it a bit tame for when I'm going out. I've gone a week without it and they certainly felt nicer, but they were a right mess so I'm going to keep using it for now since they're new.
Thanks for the info!

Re: DreadheadHQ Dread Butta and Knotty Boy Tightening Gel
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 5:21 PMi would agree. The dread butta is ONLY for mature locks. it has mineral oil in it, which is a HUGE dread no-no, because any oil (esp mineral oil) will loosen your locks.
I have the dread butta myself. the absolute only time i use it is special occassions, and I emulsify it in my palms (like a dime size amount) then rub my hands over the tops of my dreads (near the root) to get rid of frizzies.
I love the knotty boy gel. if you are in a hurry, try putting a glob in a squirt bottle of water. It's great for when you dont have time to rub it on all of your dreads. A few spritzes throughout the week helps keep frizzies down, too!
