When dreadies go bye-bye

Got a question for any of you that may have done the back and forth with dreads over the years...

My fiance just cut off his dreads last week after having them for quite a while...they were anywhere from a foot to 18 inches long...they were starting to make his neck hurt almost constantly and with the heat and humidity in Brissie, he said he just couldn't stand it anymore...

The problem is...now he's having headaches...I know that I've heard of people having headaches after a drastic haircut...especially when they take it all the way down...and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this...? The neck aches, heaviness and sweltering were bad enough...but he didn't exactly want to trade it all for daily headaches!!!

I haven't ever heard of that. Perhaps they're being brought on by the new head posture? Especially if he's been used to carrying all that weight, he could be in a period of posture correction.

Perhaps, if he visits a chiropractor or some sort of massage therapist (cranial sacral or the like) a 'tune up' realignment might help? I know I personally found myself over-correcting for the first few weeks after I combed mine out.

That's a bit of the same thoughts that I had...the body having to adjust to losing all that weight...and I mean, they were heeeavy!!!

If they don't alleviate soon, I definitely think he needs to go to a doc of some sort...and massage therapy or acupuncture/pressure would be much preferable to someone just putting him on pain relievers...

Maybe in the interim you could get him some dance posture exercises to try? (I recognize you from hair&makeup for dancers, haha!) That might help relax his neck and upper back some.

:-D...that's a thought...I sent him a copy of a write up of proper dance posture to use for his spinning a while back...I'll tell him to dig it out of his files...

And yep, that would be me...

I had 15 dreads that were a little more than 3 feet long and after 6 years I cut them off. My head, neck, shoulders, and lower back hurt for about the three weeks that followed. I finally saw a chiropractor who said my muscles had been working really hard to support all that weight for so many years that finally when the weight was gone, my body continued to compensate. When the compensation finally went away I felt really light for a few more weeks. Hope this helps

Eeek...three weeks...between the headaches and the kids, he'll be completely bonkers by then!!!

One good thing, I guess, is that he's very fit...works with heavy weights almost every day and does Brazilian Jujitsu...so I think that's probably helping to keep his body from hurting...(other than from twisting himself and other people up in knots, that is)...

I'm hoping he can find someone in his group of friends that does Reiki...he doesn't get much time to go to docs appts, so getting someone to help him out on the weekend would probably be his best bet...and in such a wide community of hippies, he should have no problem finding someone...;-)
