Hey all! I had my dreads put in yesterday, so I decided it was time to stop lurking and introduce myself :) I'm totally excited and slightly terrified of this new hair adventure. I've waited for a long time to have hair long enough to dread... now if i can just keep it together long enough to let my new baby dreads lock up, I'll be so happy!
The loctitan who did my hair did a unique combination of backcombing and crocheting tiny, tiny knots all down the length of each dread. That was it -- no waxes, no product, and everything is tight and knotty so far. It's looking pretty crazy and it's sooo hard to sleep on, but i think i'm starting on the right track. Does anyone here have any tips on helping it lock up? Does anyone have a recipe they're tried for a lock accelerator with which they've had a good experience?
Thanks for any responses, happy to join such an awesome community!

Re: Can anyone share a good recipe for a dread accelerator?
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 2:10 AMReally the only thing I think you could do as far as accelerator would be plain old salt water, but you want to dilute it enough so it doesn't make your hair look all salty. You could buy one from one of the money grubbing dread product companies, or make your own!

Re: Can anyone share a good recipe for a dread accelerator?
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 8:25 AMI just soaked mine month-olds in salt water last night and it seems to have worked like a charm. So try that, I just filled a bath full And used about half a container of Morton salt and laid back inthe water for an hour. Not only is it good for your dreads, but its good for you skin! Make sure you chug some water after to get rid of that just-got-out-of-the-ocean feeing, though. Next time I'm going to try sea salt.

Tue, March 17, 2009 - 9:00 AMThanks! I'll def give salt water a try. I especially like the idea of a salt water bath :D
The other thing i've heard of is mixing salt water with citric acid. Is that just lemon juice? It seems like that might be a bit too biodegradable to put on dreads. Has anyone else heard about this before?

Re: Can anyone share a good recipe for a dread accelerator?
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 12:41 PMThe thing about them being hard to sleep on.. don't worry, it gets better! As the roots grow out and the dreaded part is not right against your scalp, sleeping becomes MUCH more comfortable.
~Congrats on the new dreads!!!~
