It seems like my dreads aren't growing. It makes sense that growth would take longer to see, but does anyone have a comparison? If your hair grew 6 inches a year pre-dreads, would it be about half that with dreads? It's only been 8 months, so I need to be patient... While I love the baby dreads, I look forward to long lovely locks. Peace.

Re: In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 2:59 AMI find that my hair takes forever to get to my shoulders, but once they get below my shoulders, they grow really fast...although it's true that, in the dreading-process, you lose some length as hair grows-out, you may just be experiencing the same thing I do, whether I have dreads or not...the shoulders seem to be the 'key' lol -

Re: In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 6:05 AMAs usual I agree with Beksta. What I found with my hair was that since it is naturally curly, when I dreaded it, I ended up with lots of bumps, and "s" shapes as it locked up. When it started getting longer and heavier, the weight pulled the weird shapes out and added to the length. Now that it is growing "straight" again I can really tell how long it's getting. -

Re: In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?
Tue, March 10, 2009 - 12:27 PMgenerally you hair will grow at 1/3 normal speed, so if you usually manage to grow 6 inches a year, with dreads that would be cut down to 2 inches of length per year. This varies from person to person. -

Sat, March 14, 2009 - 4:07 AMI wonder why dreading your hair makes it grow slower? -

Re: In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?
Sat, March 14, 2009 - 6:24 AMit doesnt "grow" slower, it just gains length slower because its not growing straight down, its growing into millions of knots. Think of it kindof like making hemp necklaces or braided jewelery, when your done, the finished product is nowhere near as long as the individual strands you started with. -

Re: In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 12:27 PMwhen i first went with dreads, i lost a lot of length! I started out with almost hip length really thick hair, and after 3 months they were barely past my chin. But it think it really depends on hair type. My dreads got all fat and tight real quick because of the thickness and wavy curly nature of my hair to begin with. Growing takes a loonnngg time too for me. Which is why i got impatient last year shaved the back of my head and sewed those ones to the front. HA HA dreadfarm...
