Ok so I'm set on getting dreads.
However, I'd like to have thick locks,
maybe about the size of a nickel.
So how do I go about this? Do I
just make the backcombing square
area larger? If so, how large should
it be made? Thanks!

Re: How to control dread diameter.
Sat, March 7, 2009 - 7:27 PMBasically your dreads will pretty much conform to the size of the root...not right away, but when they're mature, so when backcombing you can make the root about the size of a nickle and that's roughly how wide they'll be...a couple of my roots are about the size of a redbull can in diameter, buuuuut I want really fat rasta dreads when they're long:), basically the less dreads you have, the thicker they'll be...I have 23 dreads and two of 'em are congos. -

Re: How to control dread diameter.
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 2:27 PMI hope this reaches you in time for this information to be of any help. But yesterday a few friends helped me put in my dreads and when it comes to lock size, it varies all over the head. Even if we took similar size sections over my head, the size of the lock varied (i wanted medium size locks. we took approx 1 inch squares). In the middle top of my head is one fat dread (i love it) and toward the sides and back are some smaller ones.
In the end, uniformity was no longer a concern because the big/medium/small dreads evens each other out.
We experimented and it turned out great! Good luck!
