Hey there folks! Well I have a question I'm hoping ya'll can help me out with. What are some fun styles, tricks to do with dreads? I know it's hard to put into words. My dreadies are thin for the most part and drop just below my shoulders/upper back. I have a "real job" of sorts (substitute teacher) and am looking for different ways to wear them. Thanks all and have a good one!

Re: dread styles
Tue, February 28, 2006 - 6:13 AMThat's a good question, and one I'd like the answer to, as well. For instance, how does one use a chopstick or similar implement to tie up one's hair? -

Re: dread styles
Wed, May 31, 2006 - 9:30 AMI buy these headbands that are actually like huge thin rubberbands you can get them @ any rite aid type store... They come in brown and black, My Locks are really thick and supa tight I couldnt use any kind of chopstik etc without breaking it so with the bands I can get them up in a crown bun which is pretty great because mine are still only a lil past shoulder length! I also pull up one side wrap it around then pullit to other side and wrap it around and then tie those locks in a knot and it looks like the sides meet but realy the tie is holding it together! The other thing That I cant do because mine are so thick but many use this method is to use a baby diapering pin and poke it through locks hold it together!
Wow I hope any of this makes sense its very hard to describe ! :)

Re: dread styles
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 1:58 PMhey... i work as a wedding photographey, so i have to dress formallf for work half the time... i found that chopsticks, hairsticks (the kind with 2 prongs), and those things that are a bendable piece of leather/bark/plastic/whatever with a stick that goes through them are great for dressing up dreadies....a simple bun and headband works too...i havn't had any complaints yet... lol... sidenote : mine are about shoulder/shoulder blade length...and thin, so i don't know how well these'll work for really long or thick dreadies
hope that helped

Re: dread styles
Mon, March 13, 2006 - 4:17 PMi generally wear mine up on my head either in a ponytail or a pile of craziness, but they're almost waist-length - when they were shorter, i did pigtails.
but when i need to really downplay them, i put them into a bun, and use a hairnet over them to keep them in line -- you can get hairnets at the drugstore or grocery store. you could do little pigtails that way too.

Re: dread styles
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 7:23 AMMine are thin, and to make them look more neat and tidy, I've got them twisted together in pairs...
Take two skinny dreads, twirl them each tightly the same way (say, clockwise) then twist them around each other in the opposite direction (counterclockwise) while continuing to twirl the individual dreads clockwise as the twist gets closer to the end of the dreads. End result will be a smooth, crisp and balanced rope of hair, pop a wee elastic on the bottom to hold the ends together (might not need this if your dreads are freshly waxed, but mine are just bare because I CAN'T wax for the next month or so, 'cause I'm going to be in a swimming pool almost every day and they'd never dry out)
Once you have them all in ropey twists, grab two from each side of your face, and use a clip to hold them together at the back of your head, to keep the rest of the twists off your face and looking nice!

Re: dread styles
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 11:20 AMI just found yet another weird way to put up the dreadies... I have posted pics in my profile. I have been trying to find a good secure way to get them outta the way for hula hoopin.... my new obsession!!! hehee
I have had such dready issues lately with all the performance stuff I do..... cause to dance I want them down but then I usually go straight into fire stuff where it just works better to have them up and outta the way..... So I'm looking for fast and secure!! anybody got anything out there????
Xta - I have just recently joined all the hoopin tribes but have been to busy reading and practicing to say anything yet! but I freakin luv it.... -

Re: dread styles
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 6:14 PMHooping rocks :) I've got a video of me hooping with long wool dreadfalls.. and you can actually do some cute moves with one hand holding the dreads up out of harm's way, but I gotta say that they DO make hooping much harder!
My real dreads are just shoulder length right now, and I tend to wear them up in a pony or two most of the time anyways.. but I DO find that my hoop gets jammed on them where it would have just slid off a regular ponytail :) Ah well..
Nice braided crown look, BTW.. that's way cool!

Re: dread styles
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 3:42 PMhey ladies!
I am always looking for new dready styles, my dreads are nice phatties waist length, i love them, but the do get in the way of my hooping, i have to wear em in a big pile on my head to pull of alot of neck, shoulder & "headless" moves.
I have found that a nice crown works well, sometimes i french braid them in pig tails & ten cross them from ear to ear, kind of a Hedi style. My favorite thing is to just experiment with tying my dreads together, i love not having to have an elastic to put my hair up. Mayvbe we can get some nice dready stylin videos going on youtube.com !

Re: dread styles
Wed, June 21, 2006 - 11:54 AMI dance and spin fire toys, too, and divide the mass into about six chunks (3 on the left, 3 on the right). Then I tie the two front clumps together to each other, and the two middle ones together. For the dance part I leave the back sections down, and when it's time to light up I wrap them from the back around my forehead, (one group on each side) and mine actually go around the back again where I tie 'em together and stuff the loose ends into the "turban" so I don't light it all on fire! There was a discussion on HOME OF POI about dreds and fire. I love tying them, no elastic needed! -

Re: dread styles
Sat, July 1, 2006 - 1:19 PMHey there!!
I love experimenting with different styles in my dreads, mine are between shoulder and wait length and quite thick, i find that plaiting is a great way to make them look smart, i often french plait the two front sections of my hair and tie them back to keep my locks out of my face, when i wanna look smart i french plait the whole lot either in one big plait at the back or in two, one either side.
twistind them all together is also fun, you take the ones at the front twist them then as you move toward the back of you hair you add more dreads to the twist, do one either side and tie into a pony tail then you can do all sorts with the ponytail, buns, plaits, more twists, small buns held in place with pins.
oooh and one more good one!!
make a high pony tail in your dreads leaving the front ones out, the ones at your hair line from your parting to behind your ears, then starting at your parting cross them over one anotherleaving the ends loose at the sides, this creates a sort of plaited appearance at the top but with out all the bulk and a really nice 'spread out' pony tail
hope ive helped!

Re: dread styles
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 1:16 PMI make mine into two braids for biking.
I wear them up in head wraps alot(used to be everyday)....espeically when I need to look nicer.
I make tubes out of old t-shirts and wear those when I need to work doing something where my hair can't get in my way. (I often work as a roofer)
I like to used strings made from old tshirts to tie them up it seems to stay better then just tying them with a long one.
Lately I've jsut been gathering them at the nape of my neck and then folding them up.
For years I was in the school where no one saw my dreads, accecpt for at home.
Then I went to Central America for the winter....swimming in the ocean everyday and the lack on the omnipresent Babalyon cultre I started to wear them out.....and slowly have continued this pratice.
I often still rather cover my dreads in public......especially in the city.

Re: dread styles
Sun, March 8, 2009 - 2:04 PMI found one website that has a few styles but you have to buy an ebook to view how to complete the style. Have you had any luck so far?
