I would like to dread naturally my hair is about four in a half inches now . My question is can I let it do its own thing and then seperate them later as they nap ? My hair is wavy and crazy since I always have to wear a hat since a work outside in the cold most days. It has already started to nap and I help it by doing the clockwise rubbing I have read you guys talk about . I don't want to use and chemicals and i'm in it for the long haul with lots of patience . Any help would be nice Thanks

You don't have to use chemicals to dread your hair...in fact, the less you have in your hair, the better...that means using products that won't build up and make the dreads loosen...

Personally, I think created dreads look better than the natural variety...they're much more even and alot easier to maintain...if you let your hair nap up and try to separate them later, you're gonna end up pulling hair out needlessly...which can, in turn, create bald spots...

If i get someone to help me backcomb and seperate them what length should my hair be to do that? Should my hair be all one length to start out with the backcomb method ? Thanks for your help Rebekah.

As long as your hair has enough length on it to be able to hold onto, it should be able to be dreaded...and in fact, some variation on length will help the hair to be able to lock together...just be sure you've got someone that knows what they're doing...nothing worse than a head full of half-arsed dreads...;-)

Just remember, if ya gonna go for completely natural locks, seperating mats into dreads at some later stage, that you divide them up FROM THE ROOT/SCALP...or your dreads are gonna be a real mess, and potentially cause you scalp ouchies :))
