i have had my dreads for 6 months nowand they are coming along well but was thinking about making them longer. Stumbled across something and was wondering if it would actually work. First off, found these on ebay
cgi.ebay.com.au/DARK-BROWN...Accessories
was wondering how they would look if i cut them off from the clip and attached to my real dreads. would they look totally stupid or do you think i could get away with it if i fixed up the ends and made them more realistic?
method i was thinking of using for attaching was
quinnster.fqdn.net/dreads/vibrata.html
all opinions are appreciated and please be brutally honest. i dont want to look like a wanker.

Re: honest opinions please
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 8:13 PMI think that as long as you could get the hair to match it would look fine...we were just discussing adding extensions for a broken dread in another thread...would work along the same lines...
And something else that was suggested, in case you try it and the joined areas don't feel quite secure...you can reinforce them with a bit of sewing in...
Good luck...pics when done, yes?

Re: honest opinions please
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 12:50 PMI agree with Rebekah...the most important thing to do, is make sure the synthetics match what your real dreads look like, and often finding the exact same colour as your hair can be a difficult task grrr
the method for attaching is fine, except for the blasted crochet hook. Again, wool/tapestry needle is not only much less invasive (less likely to cause damage), but also much easier to use.

Re: honest opinions please

Re: honest opinions please
Wed, July 8, 2009 - 1:56 AMWell, i have taken the plunge and bought the dread falls. Should expect to receive them in a week and then spend lots of hours putting them in. I agree about the crochet hook damaging the hairs so I will try the wool needle (good thing i knit :p). Will keep everyone informed of how it all goes.
thanks for the support -

Re: honest opinions please
Sun, July 12, 2009 - 4:38 AMLOL Kath I remember the first time I sewed-in extensions to my dreads...they were a previous set of locks, I've actually never used synthetics, so will be interested to see how you go! :D But I did the back ones first, and one of my friends has a photo she took of beck with a dreaded mullet LMAO! She keeps blackmailing me with it LOL arrrghhh! :P
Good luck hun! I'm a big sewer too, I never use the machine, always hand-sew, and it makes things so much easier if your comfortable with a needle, you'll do great! xx

Re: honest opinions please
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 1:02 AMYeah the synth dreads have come in and they look real and i put a couple in, which looked good but they felt extremely fake. Very light and I dont know how they would really hold up.
The method I used (link included in first post of thread) worked like a charm.
Wouldnt mind getting some human hair weft now and making human hair dread extensions, but the prices for human hair over here in aus is ridiculous.
Anyone thinking of cutting their dreads off????????? Potential buyer here ;) -

They're living in a paper bag atm and I'm sure they'd love a head to live on! :P -

Re: honest opinions please
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 11:13 AMWouldnt that be so cool.... You really would have a story to tell then wouldnt you - this dread belonged to Beksta and this dread belonged to such and such and this one belongs to .......
I think that would be so unique taking your dread friends everywhere with you! hee hee. -

Re: honest opinions please
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 4:05 PMIndeed it would! :D the ones I have left are on the thinner side, less than 1cm in thickness, but are very well-dreaded, no loose hairs and are currently decorated...but if you wanted, I could take the decorations out lol -

Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 4:51 PMnot to be a dick or anything...
the idea of adding dread extensions strikes me as going completely against the concept of dreadlocks. too much vanity involved. nothing wrong with it; it just seems to miss the point of dreadlocks.
just an honest opinion. -
-
Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 4:58 PMmissing the point of dreads ? there is nothing wrong in extending them . some have them for more spiritual reasons and others have them purely for fashion. the reason for them doesnt make them any less valid. i say do what makes you enjoy them, in the end they are on your head and you are the one who has to live with them. -
-
Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 5:45 PMthe fashion argument. by that logic, donning a turban merely for its aesthetics makes perfect sense. i agree there is nothing 'wrong' with dread extensions. i just happen to hold ppl that dread their hair to a higher standard than merely being concerned with fashion statements. and it gives credence to those who mock non-black ppl w/dreads as being ignorant. -
-
Re: honest opinions please
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 10:06 AMI know quite a few people that don a turban for aesthetic purposes...it's part of the costuming of tribal belly dance, just like some of us do dreads because it's also very tribal...in fact, I think that most of us choose our outward look because it's pleasing to the eye, as well as to our spirits...but think of the people that cannot choose their outward look because of cultural or religious requirements...I, for one, am glad that I'm able to make my choices and not have them made for me.

Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 5:26 PMhi mitty :)
I can understand what you're saying and, as Nicole has already said, people do it for a variety of reasons. Myself, I have added extensions from my own previously cut-off locks a few times now...for practical reasons...baby dreads being quite short and impractical for my lifestyle. I like being able to tie them back and have them out of my face.
Kath: yeah ditto LOL! I have stacks of metallic beads of differing varieties, ear cuffs, coloured thread bindings (small ones, no larger than 1 inch in length), a few springs, a few wooden beads, and homemade bead I made out of a gumnut! :D

Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 5:51 PMHi Mitty, I know this will sound funny, but I do agree with you. I never thought I would even consider dreadlock extensions. Always believed that they were a cop out but I have learnt so much in this dreadlock journey and the number one thing i learnt is 'do what makes you happy and dont care about what others think'.
I started my locks almost 7 months ago now and they were started relatively short (about 5-6 inches), It seems to take forever for them to gain any length and because they are short, I really cant do much with them. If you read another recent thread in the tribe, I have complained that i have dreads that are the perfect length for poking me in the eyeballs.
I dont want dread extensions for a fashion statement - I want it for pure practicality, just to tie them back and not have them poking my eyes out.
I'm not really sure dreadlocks should really have one specific point. Another thing I have learnt.
But I don't take any offence to your opinion because as I said - I know exactly where you are coming from. -

Re: honest opinions please
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:16 PMdidn't we, in another thread, just talk about how it's ok for people to do what they want with their hair? to say it's not ok to knot your hair for purely aesthetic reasons, is to ignore one thing i think we all agree on.. dreads are beautiful!!!!!!!! as far as adding credence to the thought that non-black dread-havers are ignorant, who cares! anyone who'd rather mock or be bothered by something that can otherwise be a source of enjoyment and beauty isn't hurting me any! i don't have dread extensions because i like mine short (and can not for the life of me make them stop growing) and bumpily (and i'm assuming most dread extensions are more "perfect" than i prefer mine to be); if i wanted them, though, for whatever reason, i would get them and not care. we have enough to get over in accepting what non-dread-havers think about our hair, we shouldn't have to worry what other havers think to. it's your body; it's the only concrete thing you have any real control over.
