natural dreads, no back combing, no wax

I haven't brushed my hair now for over 2 months. I am not backcombing, using wax, or palm rolling, any of that stuff. Just separating. Any suggestions on how I can let the process happen naturally, but at the same time help it along? I hear dreads look better in the long run if they are not back combed.

Thanks

Maybe try a saltwater spray? I live on the beach so I'm not sure as to how to make it...I know folks on here have some recipes.

I didn't do much, and it took a while for them to become so...but now they are amazing. I just rolled them between my palms occasionaly, and put a bead in particularly unruly ones. That it. Oh...and i never washed my hair for the first 8 months or so.

That's great! I guess what would really be encouraging is to hear more from brothers and sisters who have let their hair dread naturally. What was their experience, and how long did it take, was it worth waiting vs. having instadreads, and anything else they'd like to share. I was told by a friend who used to have dreads to kind of brush with my fingers just some of the ends because I want the dreads to start from the top and not the bottom. This sounds wierd, but I guess it makes sense. What do you think?

I've actually heard quite the opposite, that letting your hair section naturally like that can take the liongest and yield the poorest results.

However, I would say keep on seperating your dreads to keep from getting one massive dread. Other than that, since you don't want to palm roll or anyhting, I can't really suggest much more other than maybe a lock accelerating spray like salt water.

Oh, yeah. I pulled them apart when it got to be too crazy a maze. But, i let them take their own coarse, unless hair from way over here was going into a dread from way over there, you know.

Mine are new, but I thought I'd chime in: I back-comb mine, in addition to using the "pull-n-tangle" method Beksta & Lee Ann discussed in another thread. That said, I didn't do any rigid sectioning. My hair is curly, so I just let it separate naturally, and then we took those natural sections and back-combed them.

I don't have those way-cool "Hollywood slick" kinda dreds, though. I guess it depends on what you're after.

Well, I don't want big fatties. I am wondering if dreads get thicker over time or thinner. Do you know? But, I don't want them super thin either. I have curly hair also... and it's not very thick. I did try the method of "pull-n-tangle" on a few sections just as an experiment. They are a little frizzy at the top, but ok. It will be interesting to see how these couple dreads I made compare to the ones that form naturally.

            Hi Sierra,

RE: Do dreads get thicker or thinner?

They do get thinner as they tighten more and more, but there is another thing that must be stressed at this point...

Added thickness over time all depends on how you deal with those loose hairs at your roots that break away from your scalp...You see, every person loses (naturally) between 70 and 100 hairs naturally every single day...they are shed from the scalp (Don't get sucked-in by shampoo companies etc blaming such an occurrence on hair damage...it's not true - it's a completely natural process)...

Now, when these hairs shed, the lower section of the hair is already dreaded into your dreads...as so long as you keep threading those loosies into dreads, or making them dread with whatever else grows outta your scalp, your dreads will get thicker - those loose hairs will not remain 'static'...they will slowly work their way down into the bulk of your dread, making them THICKER...(It's for this reason, when you cut dreads, or brush them out, you have an abundance of what seem to be broken hairs...they are, in fact, naturally shed hairs that have worked into your dreads...) Don;t worry, these hairs are not going to create a HUGE bulk to your dreads, but they will look healthily plump...my dreads are thicker than their respective roots for this reason...

            Beksta :)

Mine are quite fat. Not the way I wanted them, but my daughter was getting really tired at the end. Actually one side is skinny than the other. But it seems like near the root is a little smaller. They really haven't grown too much since she did them last July. She did what I guess would be a pull and tangle on the very first one she did and she back-combed everything else.
Her hair she has been letting naturally dread since this summer. And she has lots of little dreads. They look pretty good. Once they started going she was using tightening gel from Knotty Boy. She wants to, however, go somewhere to have the rest of the back dreaded. It seems if you have short hair and letting it naturally dread, you don't get so much shrinkage. She is going to do the front a little later in time because it is still shorter than she likes. BTW I did not use any wax. Just back combing and palm rolling. And of course the counter clockwise rotation at the roots to help them along.

Keep them clean. I realize some people who use the neglect method don't wash for months on end.... But IMO that's cruel to your hair and scalp and anyone who has to smell it. The main thing, though, is that the oils in your hair, if allowed to build up, will keep your hair from matting. Clean, dry, oil-free hair dreads quicker.

I wash my hair at least once a week. I use a great shampoo by "well being". It has nettles and sage in it and feels very residue free. It's the one for curly hair. I love it!

If you don't want big fatty dreads, just separate them into smaller sections. Haha…sure sounds easy on a page. Also, I was wondering why you don't want to palm roll your dreads? Palm rolling isn't damaging like backcombing is, and it will help keep your dreads smoother, and probably less fatty as well. What I've seen of natural dreads when people don't palm roll is the dread gets flat and fat, or flat and zig zaggy. Every time my little ones try and zig zag themselves I give 'em a good palm roll and it coaxes 'em straight, but if zig zag is your way, just let 'em be.
        Good luck dread sista

Ive done the same thing, Ive done nothing to my hair since around fall 05, other than of course separating and washing my hair about once a week. Its been a long process and still isnt finished completely, but I would much rather wait a long time than have to do too much... Guess I'm lazy... Never palm rolled either, and while at first they did kinda look zigzaggy (my hair is naturally wavy), after a while they start to accumulate more hair and look smoother. I much prefer the look of natural dreads to the homogeneous look of salon-generated ones... Of course thats just my own preference.

So basically in my own experience, natural ones will probably take a lot longer, but just tough it out, eventually they'll look fine.

Thanks for the advice. I'm toughing it out.... but the only thing annoying about it all is that I shed like crazy. Anyone experience that? Hair is coming out man. It's everywhere. On my pillow, my jacket, my baby... lol.

            I feel like a canine.

            howl..........!

You may want to put something on the tips to keep the hairs in the dread until they lock up. A lot of websites say to use rubber bands, but on my hair they pull too much and hurt. So I use weave thread instead and so far it is working well.

This has been a helpful topic. I am just about to begin this process of getting dreads and it is intimidating. I think I'm in the same boat as you seirra in that I want to do as naturally as possible. I'm in no hurry so I figure might as well avoid hassles.

Now for my noob question; when you say that you are 'separating' do you mean that you section your hair off? I am trying to imagine what would be the best natural method for to get the hair to lock up.

Also, do you wear a hat all day...and uhhh i guess one of those rasta looking hats...are there any particular hats that help to lock up hair faster?
