I love dreads and Ive finally got mine back. Only a couple of weeks old but already Im feeling a bit 'meh' about it all - all the conflicting advice about what to do, the time to do it and then my immense fear of getting headlice! *Shudder* I have 2 children and my eldest goes to nursery one morning a week, increasing a little soon and Im convinced he'll bring some home to me! Ive read a thread on here with various suggestions etc and I have a question from something I read - if you have lice and sort the problem out without having to cut your dreads off, what happens with all the dead buggies?! They just stay in the dread forever? I think Id puke. Id certainly never sleep again!

    Hi Piskie :)

OK to kill and keep headlice away, add a few drops of NEEM SEED OIL to your dread shampoo...not enough to get your dreads all greasy, but enough to keep the bugs away. If you do this asap, it's unlikely you'll have to bother about dead lice in your dreads...but if, by chance, you did have this happen...obviously you wouldn't be able to get the eggs out (the ones that actually attach to the hair strands), but the actual dead lice themselves would be removed by giving your dreads and particularly scalp a damn good shampooing and scalp rub whilst shampoo is in :)

Spray your kids' hair with water and a few drops of tea tree every morning (make it weakish). I do that and I havent had any problems.

Thankyou both! I will add a bottle of neem seed oil to my 'things to get' list! I have some tea tree so will get on with spraying my son lol Do you use this method also as a 'just in case' thing or only on your children?

I gave my hair a bloody good wash yesterday to get out what wax I could, then slept with my dreads not tied away, if anything I think I feel better for it and I think my hair looks better too. I feel a lot cleaner! I think an itchy waxy scalp is something I never want to feel again :)

Absolutely...the tea tree is a natural deterrent...and since it has antibacterial qualities, it can also help to prevent mildew in your dreads...

We used to have neighbours who kids always had headlice and my daughter kept coming home with them (before my hair was dreaded) and I found that Shaving Cream was the best lice and egg killer I could get my hands on. I would lather her hair in shaving cream, leave for an hour and then rinse and comb with lice comb. It worked wonders. Dont know how it would go on dreadlocks though. It was funny though - because she smelt like brut for a few days ;p

Just be careful about how much essential oil you use on your dreads...can cause them to get a little greasy, and this hinders the dreading process...particularly if your dreads are relatively young still :))

            I have questions!

            1. What do I do about the 'loops' that Ive acquired on a couple of dreads? Couple more at the roots, and a couple more midway along.

            2. Is it ok to be pretty much concentrating on the palm rolling for now? I try and clockwise rub when I can but its prob not as often as others do it, just feels like things can be overwhelming and if I feel like its all too much in between studying and looking after my children Id be more inclined to give up altogether!

            3. Some of my dreads are a bit 'lumpy' - normal? Will they correct themselves?

            4. What about a couple of dreads that seem to have 'split' in the middle? Not by a long way but Ive noticed it now lol

            5. So whats the deal with shampoos then? I thought I was to go for shampoos that didnt leave any residue behind etc but then some people use whatever shampoo is better for their scalp. I dont think Im getting on with dreadheadhq shampoo, my scalp might get used to it but if it doesnt, what do I try then?

            6. Im convinced my dreads arent 'proper' and theyre going to come out any minute. Dont ask me why ;)

I need an 'idiots guide to dreads' or something! Thanks in advance x

Oh and 7. - Bloody wax! Im trying so hard to get it all out of my dreads, I dont think I used too much but I notice after Ive washed them, then palm rolling Im finding my hands feel a little 'tacky' which I guess is the wax. Will it all come out? Only if I have to take them out Im not sure Id put them back in again, it took so long and I had no help, Id be really discouraged.

              1. Wax - HOT HOT HOT water...and this may still take some time to get it all out...but really hot washes will eventually get it out, also try Vinegar rinses...

              2. Loops. Find some cotton thread that matches your hair colour (or alternatively, it can be any colour if you wanna later cover it up with a bead or something)...thread a regular swing needle, double the thread over for strength and knot it off. secure the thread to the actual loop, then insert needle into the dread, pulling the loop back inside the dread, sew back and forth a few times til it's secure...it's just a matter of pulling the loop back-in...and like I said, you can cover it up with a bead to hide the thread, but if you do a good job, and you've used a matching thread, you generally can't even see the repair...I've got a number that I've done that way, all have worked brilliantly :))

              3. Palm Rolling. As far as I'm concerned, with relatively new dreads, it's more important to concentrate on the lengths of the dreads than the tips or roots...they can be worked-on later, when the length are already dreading-up...that's how I've always done it.

              4. Lumpiness. Well, it firstly depends on your hair type...curlier hair tends to produce slightly lumpier dreads from what I've experienced...My hair is dead-straight, so my dreads are straight as arrows (bar the occasional loop)...So yeah, may be your hair type causing the lumpiness, but keep palm-rolling, nice and hard, to ensure the hairs kinda "stretch-out" and this may help.

              5. Shampoos. I'm a keen advocate of Dreadhead, but apparently it's not for everyone...I think it's a matter of trial and error to see what your scalp/dreads prefer, what works best for you personally...but you are certainly better off sticking with non-residue shampoos!!! Everyone's hair and scalp is different and responds differently to different shampoos...a lot of people love Knotty Boy Bar Soap, but it gave me the world's worst dandruff ever...and most of the others I've tried have done likewise, or simply caused damage to my dreads...my dreads like dreadhead and respond well to it...I'd recommend testing out a few and seeing what happens.

              6. "Im convinced my dreads arent 'proper' and theyre going to come out any minute. Dont ask me why ;) "

LOL I think that's pretty natural...I'm currently on my third set of dreads, and every time I've had newbies, I have always had similar worries and stresses about my dreads...that they're not working, and they look horrible etc etc...but persevere and keep asking advice from ppl in the know...eventually they'll be stunning! :D

              7. Complete Idiot's Guide to Dreads...LOL hey that's why we're here! In all my years with dreads, I have tried pretty much everything on my dreads...practically every method recommended...and I can tell you, there's a lot of misinformation out there...you'll d well just sticking on tribe, asking fellow dreadheads...we've all got experience, have spent time working-out little tricks and tips...and we're always happy to help with advice :)

Thankyou! I will have to try and persuade my partner to help me with the loop sewing, sounds interesting! I guess Im gonna have to learn to just chill out a bit with all this, and remember that it'll (hopefully) all come together with time. My problem is that I was everything perfect right now! And nothings perfect is it! ;)

Yeah it's actually really easy...I do it on my own dreads even! All I need is a mirror...your dreads will be fine, and it's onlynatura; to want them looking spectacular right away lol! However your patience will be rewarded eventually...look after your babies and they'll be great! :Dxx

Thankyou! Does it make much difference if I havent been able to be 'exact' with the sectioning when I started? I tried as best I could but I notice now by feeling with my fingers that a couple are more rectangular in shape at the roots, if you get me, rather than all being perfect neat squares, Im hoping Im just being me and finding fault with everything ;)

I was naughty. I didn't like the ideas of squares on my head and also I found when dreading my hair - it wanted to section itself. So we just grabbed and dreaded. It's hard to explain about my hair choosing the sections but it was like you got the hair and no matter how much you backcombed - part of that section just would not matt up with the rest of that chunk of hair. So I ended up doing what my hair wanted to do. hee hee. Still, think it turned out ok.

                        No it doesn't really matter...Mine are diamond-shaped :D

LOL it's so easy to get all stressed about little things when you have newbie dreads,...I know I always have done the same...but it really is a matter of just relaxing and letting them do them do their thing :)

Thankyou both! Where would I be without you two lol prob dread free by now ;)

So Im concentrating now on getting something to 'stick' them on those days when they need it - like what I wouldve used my wax for but Im not touching that again unless I really have to! Any recommendations?

And trying to sort out the loops/kinks and keeping the roots as good as I can.

Thankyou again! I can relax a bit now! :)

RE: non-wax alternative...I use Aloe Vera gel, which you can get fresh from the actual plant, or in tubes from pharmacists/chemists etc...you don't need much, it's natural, and comes out easy in wash!

I was surfing on the net looking at dread stuff and came across this site called knattydread.com Anyway, had a look in the shop section and came across this knatty dreadlocks cream. Apparently it is petroleum free and beeswax free. I havent used it yet but am hoping to try to order some in the next few weeks. I also wanted to try using the African Black Soap fpr washing my dreads. From what I have read - it sounds really good! Here is the link to katty dreadlock cream. They sell it individually too! But I really dont know what it is like.
