Help Getting my Dreads Off my Neck

My dreads are almost 3 years old and getting pretty long. I had ALOT of hair to begin with and now have a hard time even getting the super sized rubber bands around them.
I need some suggestions on keeping them off my neck. I have too much hair to use a regular hair clip or clips and while pulling them back with a scarf, gives me some relief, they are still hanging down and very hot.
I would love some ideas on how to keep them piled up on top of my head.
Thanks!

    Heya Lee Ann hun :))

Try hanging your head upside down and gather the dreads together ontop of your head, secure with a self-made hair-tie of elastic...this keeps them off your neck/back, and you can even tuck the ends back into the elastic like a bun...Have you got a Tam? I often use my Tam to keep mine up and outta the way too...although this can get pretty hot in the warmer months...I think it's just a matter of experimentation, what works and what doesn't...but I have always found tying them up ontop of my head works really well...just be sure to let em down ocasionaly to let your scalp 'breathe'...sweaty scalp = dandruff! :O

    xx beksta

hahah yeah I know :P It works really well actually...once you get used to all that weight up on top lol

yeah I'm well, and the dreads are back on - sewed the old set back into the new set, so they're back down past my shoulders again :D awww I missed my babies soooo much :D Still got lotsa decorating to do (the top half is bare, whilst the lower is still beaded etc)...and some more work on the roots, but they're back, baby!!! This profile pic I got now is with the new ones...gonna have to take some better pics, though :))

*giggle*...that's what my sweetheart called his 'pineapple' do...there's these great hair wraps that they use quite alot in Oz that are, I believe, made from a hemp/cotton blend...they're about the size of the bottom of a t-shirt and come in all kinds of lovely colours...

I was wearing one just as a headband here...people.tribe.net/d8d66e42-...9da4315497
And here's a pic of him with one tied in his hair to make the 'pineapple'...people.tribe.net/d8d66e42-...d1da93bdfc

You could take the bottom of an old t-shirt and do the same thing...tie-dye it...embellish it...whatever you'd like...but it works really well...stretchy and soft...won't get caught in your hair and end up tearing any of it out...

Haha. An international student that was staying at my house for awhile called me "pineapple" whenever I wore my hair up like that! It really does look like a pineapple when your dreads are on the shorter side. :)

Rebekah, I love those hemp headbands! I gots me a pretty green one :D You can also use scarves...wrap it around your head and tuck-in the ends...

Yeah mine go pineapple, although most of mine are considerably below my shoulders...cos they're different lengths, so most tie back on top of my head in a bun, but maybe half a dozen or so poke all over the place LOL...I have scared the heck outta myself a few times, thinking I had a spider on me or something, and it was just a rogue dread :P

Ye, I love 'em, too...I only wish I'd gotten a couple more...altho, I suppose now that Pat's (my fiance) dreads are gone, I could probably use his, once I get back home...(stupid slow paperwork)

We really got a kick out of his pineapple 'do...adults would give him the funniest look, but kids seemed to love it...we were in Coles one day and this lil boy, probably about 5, looked at him all wide-eyed and said, 'Wow! Cool hair, mate!!!'...*giggle*...he had string wraps and some beads in them, too...very eye catching...

By the way...do you do single or double staves? Pat does doubles...and occasionally plays with single contact staff.

Lil vid of him on a first attempt at a tutorial...he's just soooo adorable...(ye, I'm biased)...www.youtube.com/watch

                    heheh yeah nick his :P

LOL yeah I get stacks of people (especially grannies for some reason) who admire my dreads...lotsa beads and coloured cotton bindings...and in the warmer weather I generally have them in "the pineapple", most in a bun, but have a bunch that stick out and up all over the place...so always interesting to look at LOL

I do single staff, but have been teaching myself double...trying to get the left side as smooth as the right...sucks cos I don't know anyone else who does double :(( mann most people seem to pass on staff and go to poi (which I won't even try...it's tempting fate lmao)

yayyy love firey dreadheads! :D (and fellow ppl with the name Reb heheheh)

That's something that Pat struggled with when he first started doing doubles, too...hard to get your passive hand to do what the dominant one does...and he's the same way about poi...tried it and decided that he'd had enough of whacking himself in the boy bits...*giggle*

I've been dubbed as Bek by all my Aussie friends...and it was Pat that started it...was a nickname when I was little and I kinda like it being resurrected...has become my favourite...:-)

I thought it was soooo cool that there were older women in Oz with bright coloured accents in their hair...you'd never see that here in the states...too many conservative, uptight old women...nothing like the laid back, fun attitude that I experienced there...was part of what made me fall in love with Oz...(fell in love with the Aussie, first...the country, second...and I wanna come hoooooome!!!)

Yeah it's coming-along slowly with me...lefty's still not as strong as the righty, but I'm getting there :D yeah I kept donging myself in the head with the poi...man they hurt!

LOL oh my...I used to go by BEK too lol, then re-added the C, although most of my friends call me Beksta :)

Yeah I don't understand all these dreadheads who don't decorate! It's a great way to individualise your dreads...it's great fun! I've seen some really bizarre stuff in dreads too...one of my exes used to keep a spare key in his (his dreads were massive and he had over 100!!!), mini dream catchers, feathers, whatever...gets all the creative juices flowing lol

Keep at it, it'll come...just takes lots and lots of practise...I tried poi, too...and hooping...but I discovered belly dance in between and it's the one that really stuck...don't really have to worry about whacking myself with anything other than some hair danglies or a sword...IF I did sword dancing yet, that is...*giggle*

Ugh...I was Becki most of my life...went to my real name, Rebekah, about 5 years ago...and became Bek about 3 years ago...and my new found birth family calls me Beka...so I think I've run the thru about all of my name options...:-p

Okay...was this an awesome set of dreads, or not?...:-D

                          people.tribe.net/d8d66e42-...ed4e952139

No matter what he did, those ends would not stop curling...drove him crazy, but I loved it...I couldn't even tell you how many dreads he had, but there were alot of them...he's got very thick, curly hair when it's not dreaded, so can you imagine how thick it had become after almost three years?

**Sorry about the hijack, Lee Ann...I do tend to get off the subject quite often...*looks sheepish*

yeah I'm slowly getting there...much better than I was even a few months ago lol cool, my brother's mother-in-law does belly dancing, and has recently taken-up sword dancing...crazy stuff! :D

ohhh mann I HATE being called Becky....makes me wanna slap the speaker lol :P

hey yeah they are stunning...awww I got dead-straight hair, really a pain to dread...would kill for hair like his! I only have 57...but then again, I'm pretty lazy nowadays, so any more they'd be even more of a mess LOL :P damn I so need to sew my roots (loose hairs) arghhh :P

heheh yeah it is a bitta a hijack lol oh well u gotta do what u gotta do ;-)
