What's your routine to care for your dreads?

I was at an Umphrey's Mcgee concert the other night and was approached by a fellow dreadhead and told that I wasn't properly caring for my dreads! (he was pretty drunk too). He told me the best thing to do is the rip and tear method. All I've been doing is palm rolling and root rubbing. Should I be doing more? I feel like some parts of my dreads are looking a lot better than other parts.. It'll be dreaded nice- then no dread at all- then back to dread near the bottom. I guess I'm just worried there not going to turn out nice! Oh- and they're about 2 and a 1/2 months old.

Nah I think it sounds like you're doing just fine the way you are. I too had the dreaded in parts and undreaded in parts thing, it sorts itself out. Just keep on at them like you are and you'll be fine!

If the undreaded sections don't sort themselves out, get yourself some regular rubberbands...and I don't mean the little dreadlock ones...I mean like the ones you use in offices etc...put em n the undreaded sections, down the whole length of undreaded bit, it will make a hatched, criss-cross pattern and actually cause your dread to kink-up. Leave it in a day or two, then take it out. Your loose, undreaded hair will be kinky where the band was...palm-roll the heck outta it. It'll give your hair a little more 'body' with which to lock-up...I get this problem with new locks cos I have straight hair

      Good luck :))

i think it depends how long you've HAD your dreads...2 1/2 months is baby dread time^^ How did you get the dreads? I'm assuming you didn't do the rip and tear method [which i find is the best way to make dreads that last, but not everyone would agree] but as for maintaining?
In my first 5 months, i rolled the suckers once a day, i root rubbed twice or three times a week, and i also used dread gel [not wax] to tighten the little suckers. It worked really well for me. I also started washing them on a regular basis after the first 2 months. But I naturally have very coarse hair, so they were already nice and tight. I find once you've reached the "all my dreads are dreads" phase, that washing them is really good kudos on them. Helps your roots, tightens the dreads themselves, washes out any gunk thats been building up in your head...as long as you're using some sort of residue free shampoo.
But ya...2 and a half months if early. Just keep up what you're doing for now. If you're really concerned you're early enough in that you COULD condition them all, get rid of them and start fresh [i mean if you think thats necessary] but it is entirely up to you.

BY the way, I'm Sabine. This is my first post. It was long. Ha....
