Okay...after much thought and resolving myself to the fact that I won't be able to brush my hair, I'm seriously considering having my hair dreaded...
My hair tangles quite easily, anyhow...it's medium wavy and is down to about 2 inches below my bra strap...I'm wondering how much length I'm gonna lose...my hair has never been this long and I do tribal style belly dance, plus fire fingers...
How much of a problem am I gonna have if I go the dreadie route? And is there anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area that wouldn't charge me a small fortune to have it done?

You should be able to find someone...try looking for dreadheads, or even get a friend with some patience, onto here or elsewhere, doing some research on methods...it's not hard to do! -

Thu, May 14, 2009 - 5:13 PMYe, I wish I'd not missed the Shakori Hills festival this spring...that would have been the ideal place to find someone...but lack of funds and transport kind of ended that venture...
My main problem is that I'm in the middle of the bible belt in NC and it's kind of unusual to see Caucasian women around here with dreads...I've tried one ethnic shop already, but they had no clue who could do it for me...*shrugs*...gonna keep trying, tho...once I get an idea in my head (or on it, in this case) I don't stop till it's done!!!

Sat, May 30, 2009 - 8:18 PMYe, but it looks like I'm just gonna have to wait till I get back to Oz...I really don't have any friends with the patience, nor the know how of ratting to actually trust them with the job...I'm a former hairdresser, so it's the stigma of being a bit on the picky side...*looks sheepish*
The only people I've found in this whole state that know anything about dreads seem to think that you let your hair get horribly dirty, then just start twisting it together...ewwwwwwwwww!!!
But...I have found a friend that wants her hair dreaded...if she can get up the nerve to actually go thru with it, maybe we can trade off, once hers is done...Buddhists have loooooooots of patience...:-D -
