I have had my dreads just over a year now, and they are so crisp and dry that I can't stand the touch of them. I used to dye them bright red, so I undersand that my hair is quite damaged. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to use to soften them up.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Crispy, dry!
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 4:45 PMA lot of people would say don't, but if you use a little wax it should soften them up bit. -

Re: Crispy, dry!
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 10:46 AMI use an ethnic hair care product called "Softee" about once a month. It really helps! Or about once every 6 months I use a conditioner just on the dreads, not my scalp. I know this isn't a good habit to get into but it also really helps to make the babies much softer.

Mon, August 25, 2008 - 11:45 AMThanks David for posting the link. I haven't been on the Knotty Boy site in a while and didn't realize that had these condition sprays. I love the description of how they smell. Think I will "yum, yum, get me some!" -

Re: Crispy, dry!
Mon, August 25, 2008 - 3:51 PMI just bought some of those conditioning sprays. I got the coco knotty and the purple haze lavender. I really like them both. I think they do condition a bit, but my dreads never really seem that dry. I mainly bought them because I'm such a smell-oriented person that I love for my hair to have some good scents every now and then. the scent lasts a while too. -

Re: Crispy, dry!
Mon, November 17, 2008 - 8:06 PMAloe will condition & strengthen your dreads without leaving any residue. It also tames the frizzies and soothes your scalp.
Sage & fennel are great conditioners: just boil a handful of herbs in a medium pot for 15-30 minutes to make a strong, dark tea. Let it cool and soak your head with it. Wrap your dreads in a towel and let it soak in for 30 minutes before rinsing.
Use a shampoo bar that is made with hemp oil, cocoa or shea butter, and/or jojoba oil. -

Sat, November 29, 2008 - 9:47 AMI second the aloe. I use wax a few times a year, too. My dreads just soak up the moisture!

Re: Crispy, dry!
Sun, December 14, 2008 - 7:11 PMI try to avoid regular conditoners but I do use a spray on leave in conditoner called Focus 21® Seaplasma® Moisturizer
Seaplasma All Purpose Hair and Skin Moisturizer with NA-PCA draws moisture from the air and binds it to hair and skin. This formula prevents formulation of free radicals which cause aging, dry skin, hair and scalp problems. This stuff contains sea salt which is relly good for your hair and the Focus 21 Panasea Hair Repair
Focus 21 Panasea - Emergency hair repair formula for extremely damaged hair. Focus 21 Panasea conditions and repairs hair by delivering essential nutrients directly into the hair shaft. This is also a good deep conditoner that does not over conditon or over soften. I buy the Sea Plasma Moisturizer from Ulta which is a cosmetics store or you can just Google it to buy on-line.

Re: Crispy, dry!
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 6:34 AMHeya, I also felt like my dreads needed a bit of extra 'softening', it's made by 'Dark and Lovely' and it's a 'moisture seal leave-in styling mist'. Smells good too! I stay in South Africa, not sure where else you'll find it???
