I met this guy the other day getting a "dreadlock perm." First of all I didnt even know that was possible. I also hear a lot about dread extensions these days. Some think it's cheating if you don't go through the process, some don't care. What do you think?

Well since the meaning of your locks can mean many different things to many different people, why shouldn't they be allowed to recieve them differently... right? Personally, I wouldn't bother with a perm, but I'm not going to judge anyone that does. Its funny how there are indeed those "dreadier than thou" knotty heads out there. I just recently sewed in my old dreads to my short hair... if its cheating then I don't care, because it makes me feel beautiful.

i'm getting some dread extensions on friday to give my currents ones some weight. I'm told that it helps with the loopies to weight them down with more dreads. I'm also just stoked to have long hair :)
I'll post some pics on friday :)

how are u getting ur exstensions? are they with real hair? cuz i have shoulder length dreads, i added synthetic ones i loved them because they were long, but there so heavy and bad for my scalp, i really want to get some real hair to add to the legnth as its lighter, but i dont know where i can get any from, at a reasonable price as money is a bit rubbish, i just miss my long hair :(

i have synthetic extensions that are attached to the ends of my dreads, only a few attach at my scalp. They were sore for the first day or so, but they feel pretty normal now. My scalp is really sensitive and it hasn't affected that at all yet. Alls well so far!

I don't recommend dread perms, as I've seen too many people who've had dread perms done on hair that's not strong enough for the chemicals have their dreads start falling apart after 6 months or so. While we do both dread extensions and natural permanent dreads at our salons, both processes involve no chemicals and wax only when necessary. I don't think of extensions as cheating - I like being able to take them out and brush my hair every few months too :)

hiya! i have permanent, human hair extensions in my dreads. i am transitioning to natural hair, but I was too impatient to grow my hair out before starting my dreads. I found a shade that matched my own hair at a beauty supply shop for around $40 and did it myself.

They are indistinguishable from my own hair, but I will warn you that they took a few hours to do with a latch hook and a felting needle!

In terms of styling, they feel and move the same way my own hair does. Unfortunately, I haven't dyed them yet so I can't speak to that.... however, I did research that before I put my extensions in and found out that you can dye them a few weeks after you've had them in, you just need to make sure to saturate the entire dread, rinse ALL of the dye out of it, and skip the deep conditioner in favour of your usual, lighter dread moisturizing routine.

I'll see if I can separate my natural hair from my extension and post a photo to show you...

        Cheers!

I have dread extensions and love them! My natural hair is dreading up under the pinch braids that are used to connect the extensions. The extensions add weight, which is helping my natural dreads form into the nice slender, non-bunchy dreads, like I prefer. Since the extensions prevent the more 'traditional' waxing and palm-rolling techniques, they use string around the base of each dread to gather in loose hairs and to keep them separated. Mine were done by Hair Police, though I'm doing my own maintenances now that I figured out how. So it's still a lot of work and it doesn't feel like cheating. The only downside is that I have to be watchful of any extensions that slip out. But my natural hair is very straight and super slick, so this likely isn't a common problem for others.

K, I'ma be the one 'nay-sayer' and lay this down.....The very purpose of dreadlocks is to show that there is beauty in total naturality.....not in vanity.
Just let your locks grow.....if they don't grow...consider that you weren't meant to have 'em.
Chemicals, and synthetics just seem to defeat the whole purpose....but, that's just me.
    Aloha,

I value this opinion, but I disagree.
I don't think there is a 'purpose' to having dreadlocks. I think that if anything the 'purpose' is personal expression. If you can grow kick ass dreads, thats awesome, but if you can't I don't think it makes your style any less of an expression because you bought or made it. A lot of creativity goes into the construction of synthetic dreads.
      just sayin :)

Many of us are not 'meant' to have dreads and it just won't happen if we don't put some work into it. But that sure won't stop us from trying! Nor does it make the dreads any less beautiful once they mature. Besides, the 'purpose' of dreads varies as greatly as the people who choose them to express themselves through this form of body art.

That's it exactly, Jackie - I have naturally very straight hair (there's a bit of a slight wave once it gets past my shoulders, but that's it)...my hair id not want to dread...it has taken a LOT of work and dedication, but I've finally gotten to the point that I only have to deal with the roots....people just gotta stick at it. Don't get disheartened...

I also have incredibly straight hair (no kink at all) that never even tangled when it was loose and undreaded. But I use to reguarly have braided fake extenstion and my hair would naturally dread above the braids. So on its own it would never ever have dreaded, but because of something else I was doing to my hair, and not even trying to get dreads (infact very different being as they were extremly long and very bright colours of plastic hair).
After giving in a dreading my hair I have realised that it seems to want to be dreaded and even though I still have to do a lot of work on the regularly its much easier that the amount of washing and stuff I had to do with my 'normal' hair.

I was also wondering. I wanted to get the dreadlock extensions because my hair is VERY short (i'm a girl) and I want to grow my hair out, and i also want to get them to see if I will like them once they're in. I was just wondering if people think it's worth doing. After having the extensions, I would like to go about growing my natural hair into dreads, but I just wanted to see what people thought about getting the extensions, or if I should just wait the 2 years until my hair is long enough to start the natural process.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, you will need to have locks already, to sew the extensions onto - baby dreads I usually recommend no shorter than 4-5 inches. But extensions work great if done properly - I am on my third set of locks, and second set of extensions (I just use the locks I cut-off from previous sets).
