I am going to be really honest and just say that for the most part white folks with dreads don't sit right with me, it seems forced unnatural and kinda contrived and almost bourgeois( the same a black person with chemically straightened hair)

I don't want to pick a fight but I would really like to know why locs?
I have locs because 1, my hair almost locs on its own 2, I am paying respect to my ancestors 3, I know the history and the struggle behind locs and I pay homage to that.

With that in mind I would like to know what dreads mean to somebody that cant not identify with that struggle or history.

I met this guy the other day getting a "dreadlock perm." First of all I didnt even know that was possible. I also hear a lot about dread extensions these days. Some think it's cheating if you don't go through the process, some don't care. What do you think?

Burnt hair. Rubber bands, yay or nay?

Just three days ago i got my hair backcombed into pretty dreads, and left the rubber bands at the roots, but the bands seem to be hindering all my little frays (i got lots of them, i jumped through a bonfire a while back and it singed my hair up a good bit) from becoming part of the locks. So is it super important to leave the bands in for a few weeks or should i take them out and roll the frays in?

crocheted roots

another thread brought up a question. when someone was asking about their crocheted locks, someone said they didn't consider crocheted locks dreads. i knotted my hair over a year ago, and, about two months later, someone showed me how to thread my lock through the loose hair at the root to tighten it up. i needed to keep them separated because they were webbing, and ripping them or cutting them was causing a _huge_ amount of loose hair. i've done this pretty consistently for the rest of the year; i like to fidget, anyway. there are, as far as i've seen, two ends to the spectrum of what people consider dreads: one end is complete neglect (which i tried three times, but couldn't get down with the one massive dread in the back..), and letting your hair do it's own thing and form it's own rhythm; the other end is that dreads are hair that is irreversibly knotted. my hair looks great; unless you look right up close, you can't see a difference between the backcombed and the crocheted sections. i love them and wouldn't get rid of them for anything, "dreads" or no, but i was wondering what others thought about this, since crocheting is recommended so often on the big websites, and i assumed it was something that people just did. since there's so very little difference between the sections, i would also welcome other solutions to keeping my hair tight at the roots. i've thought of tying them off with my hemp twine at the root to keep them from webbing and knot together, but i have 86 of these things on my head, big and small, and my hair grows really fast, so i've avoided that much work so far!

Damn, waxing is sooo tedious but a little of it helps with maturing faster riiight?
I got 64 of em, can't imagine how long it would take for those of you who have more.
How long did it take for yours to lock up fully, any tricks in the fight against nappyness?
Also my hair is very curly so that should help greatly too.

so my dreads are about 2 1/2 years and i had them started with hairpolice's "dread perm" (mistake, i know.. i was young) ALSO while my dreads were maturing i probably bleached them a few times (bad again, i know) so, here i am now stuck with the consequences, having DRY, BRITTLE dreads. WHAT can i do to save them? i do have knotty boy dread conditioning spray, how do you feel about that stuff?! Are there any oils you suggest i put in. HELP! thanks!

New to tribe/dreads..looking for help

Hi guys and gals. For the past few weeks I have been forming some Dreads and while they seem to go alright, after I wash my hair most of it falls out. How long should I wait to wash the first time? and what can I do to keep it from looking too oily? I have fairly wavy hair and it gets oily after 2-3 days so that presents a problem. Some stuff I have read suggested washing my hair with baking soda? would love some input on that.
I want to grow them as natural as possible, maybe some backcombing here and there to keep the ends together.

Any help would be awesome, as I have been wanting dreads since I was four-teen years old.

i'm in the process of getting natural dreads. obviously this will involve long periods between washing my hair and when i do it will be with residue free shampoo. i've been using this shampoo for a while now anyway w/straight hair and it leaves my hair smelling like it hasn't been washed. if i know that i'm going to be around the ladies i end up using scented shampoo. i can't be doing this anymore, but don't want my funky hair turning off the ladies either.

what do ya'll do for making your hair smell fresh n clean? i remember reading about someone that used incense on their dreads.

i spend a lot of time in the woods and theres tons of ticks around here, i've only had one on my skin luckily (that i was aware of at least) do you worry about ticks attaching to your head under your dreads/ found one in your hair? i don't really worry about it, but i'm wondering if maybe i should be? i wouldn't mind them if they weren't potentially carrying lyme disease. ...

i have had my dreads for 6 months nowand they are coming along well but was thinking about making them longer. Stumbled across something and was wondering if it would actually work. First off, found these on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DARK-BROWN-LIGHT-BLACK-Dreadlocks-Dreads-Hair-Piece_W0QQitemZ310151844989QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Women_Accessories?hash=item48367d947d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

was wondering how they would look if i cut them off from the clip and attached to my real dreads. would they look totally stupid or do you think i could get away with it if i fixed up the ends and made them more realistic?

method i was thinking of using for attaching was

http://quinnster.fqdn.net/dreads/vibrata.html

all opinions are appreciated and please be brutally honest. i dont want to look like a wanker.

reshaping my roots???

i'm going to do my absolute best to try and describe what's going here..

my hair is pretty coarse and wavy, so the roots have always matted up a lot- too much. i think i'd not have such a problem if my dreads had more definite edges at the root. when we did them, we sort of just grab chunks of hair. i've been wondering if i should find some way to fix this. maybe if i took them, one at a time, and with a nose hair trimmer (or something) and made more clear lines, then tended the hairs as they grew back? it would take a long time, but i wouldn't want to deal with a ton of loose hairs growing up all over the place.

also, i have a very wide variety of sizes on my head, but i'm beginning to lose the little ones (they're being swallowed up at the roots. did anyone else go through this? what are they going to end up looking like? i'm pretty ok with it, i'm sort of ready for thicker dreads, and the thick ones seem to mat up waaaay better than the thin ones..

Alright, so two of my dreads started to get a little thin in certain spots but i didn't think it was a big deal. Then i got out of the pool one day to find that one of them broke off at the weak point. I don't want the same thing to happen to the other one so please help. And any ideas on what to do about the short one? It's a bit large so i don't think i want to combine it.
Thank you

Crotchet/Interlocking Dreads

Back with yet another question. Are crotchet dreads the same as Interlocking dreads? I'm thinking yet again of a 'quick' solution to my baby dreads. A few people advised I should go to an expert at least once...so I think I should take that route. I spoke to the lady today and she said the neatest and quickest way would be to crotchet the dreads. My only worry is what happens with the new growth...do i continue to palmroll the new growth or keep on with the crotchet method.............and would it be uniform to the rest of the crotchet dread......or u don't palmroll? Basically, dear friends of mine..............should I or shouldn't? I know I worry too much and may b a bit vane over all this.........but hey, I have good advisers here......LOL.

I want longer dreads and was considering buying hair and then dreading it to sew into my own BUT:

I have extremely fine hair.
I mean extremely.
My locks are quite a different texture from others because of this.

So I'm thinking that wouldn't work very well since my dreads would be different texture and weight further down.

If anyone's got hair like mine and a good set of old dreads and are willing to sell....?

Strange request but whatever.

I have super thin fine straight hair. Right now, the top is about 3.5 inches long. If I put dreads in NOW how much length will I lose? I was planning on just back combing. Am I going to look like a dready pinhead? Or wil they lay down this short?

Im going to add dread extensions to them eventually... but wonder if i will look ridiculous until I get them all made...

I haven't brushed my hair now for over 2 months. I am not backcombing, using wax, or palm rolling, any of that stuff. Just separating. Any suggestions on how I can let the process happen naturally, but at the same time help it along? I hear dreads look better in the long run if they are not back combed.

Thanks

ok fuck it i give up. i took a shower and my shit is fucked, its horrible and I want to cry. i am so pissed at my friend for half assing this attempt at dreads she has done this twice. every time i tried to tell her "you need to back comb the roots more" or "you need to back comb it more before just twisting it with wax and palm rolling" she would just tell me to shut up and stop complaining and be glad she is doing anything at all and just be a total bitch about it, its not her head its mine and im the one that has to live with the after effects of not putting enough effort into it. all ive wanted for 3 years is a head of thick dreads and this time i thought "hey third times a charm" but it was worse than the second time. it cannot be repaired it cannot be fixed it would just have to be redone. does anybody know a good professional dreader in the seattle area?

Dreads turned out very badly, unknotting?

It was about 6 months ago I started the neglect method (for the fourth time..) this time hoping for it to turn out properly. Previous times my hair either didn't lock up and the last time I decided I didn't like them. So I combed and pulled them out. But I really hate the time it takes keeping my hair untangled so I gave dreads another shot. Everything seemed like it was going great, but I didn't know where to buy bands to keep them from joing together(read: lazy). My hair turned out awfully, I've been trying to comb it out for about two months, I've gotten about 5 dreads out (one of them was this absolute monster) as well as all the ends are untangled. However, the roots are matted to hell.

My hair is seperated into 4 sections, 2 at either side on the front that are untangled, and 2 at the back that are two giant matted logs, splaying out into what would have been different dreads. This is both very painful and looks very stupid (think matted pigtails haha). I've been combing and drenching it in conditioner just about every other day with some very slow results. What can I do to hurry this up? My hair is long (way down my chest) and curly. The curls have knotted together, making this a hard job for a comb - ive been using a nail to pull it apart. Cutting my hair isnt an option, please help?

Hi guys,

I finally had my friend record me dreading one of my friends and also write an article on how to make dreads using a comb to backcomb and a crochet hook to tidy the dread up. No wax needed.

Check the article here: http://www.lifeinkl.com/2008/05/26/how-to-make-dreadlocks/

My boyfriend has long hair, (about half way down his back) which is matted by neglect method. He simply stopped doing anything to his hair about 6 years ago. As a result, the dreads are all different sizes and were only locked for a couple of inches mid-length although these locks are really tight and mature (also very irregularly shaped). The roots were unlocked up to about 3 or 4 inches and so were the ends, I convinced him to let me do stuff to them and I started back combing the ends and looping the roots through themselves, but this seems to have made it so so so much worse, the roots are all up in the air so my poor baby looks like he has a birds nest on top of his head! and the ends are starting to unravel again, he refuses to go see a loctician or to do anything to them himself even though he seems to be happy to let me deal with them, I have lots of patience, but can someone please PLEASE PLEASE tell me what to do? both in terms of how to fix them and how to maintain them healthily (he's also having serious dandruff problems)

If anyone can offer me ANY advice I would be eternally grateful

Thanks... C

I did my room mates dreads 3 years ago now, and he recently did mine for me. He did them with what I think are pretty big sections of hair. I just sewed the roots to make them nicer looking (I start a new job soon) but now I'm super self conscious about the big sections on my head compared to the size of my dreads. I started them 4 months ago, and they look fine as long as the roots aren't tight...

Any suggestions other than having that inch or 2 at my scalp not dread?

Every once in a while I think about re-doing them with smaller sections, but I don't really want thin ones.

What is the best way to join 2 dreadlocks together? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hi guys, I have had my dreads for 6 months now and they seem to be going good apart from thin roots. My husband and I backcombed them all in and I was after the thinner looking dreads, but they are getting thinner and I feel that they are too thin especially up at the roots, where they dont seem to have a lot of hair to hold on to. So I have been faced with 2 options - cut them and start again (which I really want to avoid) or perhaps start joining some together.

So, I'm thinking of going with the latter but really need some advice on how to join/marry them together. Just wondering what the way gives the best result and roughly how long does it take for them to become one dread? My hair is fine and straight caucasian hair and at the moment - between 6 - 8 inches long.

I really need some help because I just don't want to give up on my journey as yet. Any other suggestions are welcomed too.
Please Help!!!!!

Suggestions for dry dreads?

Howdy all, I just started my dreading journey about a month ago and my dreads are so dry that they just frizz up completely. At first a started out using a little bit of wax, but now i just try to stay natural. Right now i have all sorts of dry frizzies and lose hairs and was wondering if anyone knows what may help...i look at some dreading conditioners but really dont want to use a product but if thats what i need to do, i will. Has anyone used these conditioners and found that they help? Or any other suggestions?

i've read multiple accounts of people vouching for dreadheadhq and then in other areas declaring wax to be the devil.

dreadheadhq sells wax and encourages the use of it.

so who am i supposed to listen to?

I need an opinion on what i should do about these baby dreads please

Hello. i was wondering, i got some dreads put in(28 total) and i have REALLY fine straight hair and there are loose hairs EVERY WHERE like some up to 2-3 inches long coming from the roots and the middle of every dread. any way i was wondering if i should sew all the hair into the dreads with a wool needle(some advise i recently got) or if i can perform the neglect or patience method. im asking because it seems like the neglect method would only work if ALL the hair is free and straight so it will all mesh and mat together and it seems like it would be harder for loose hair to mat into a baby dread. they are 3 days old right now and i used wax for the initial dreading but dont plan on using it ever again. i haven't washed my hair yet but i think i might go do it after i post this because i hate the way the wax feels in my hair and having a bunch of wax in my dreads definitely makes me NOT want to palm roll(because wax gets on my hands and therefore on EVERYTHING i touch for the next day). thanks in advanced for the help and im crossing my fingers for the neglect method lol.

Hi Guys.........I am going crazy over my hair and I think I'm getting way tooooooo obsessed. I dreaded my permed hair 2 months ago with dreadheadhq products as I was told it dreads any type of hair...it started well but I stopped using the wax after all the negativity I heard bout it. Secondly, d wax doesn't really leave my hair after I wash with the residue free shampoo! Without d wax, my hair looks dry and the permed ends stick out. So, I palm roll and use dread butta. then i heard excessive palm rolling breaks hair.....................So my solution was to use yarn to twist my hair so I can keep my hands off.....plan to keep in for a month! I don't know if this would help and I basically don't want to give up..............I just want nice dreads cos I'm a professional but don't know how to go about it.................PLEASE PLEASE HELP!. Sorry for the long story.....LOL

I'm a couple weeks away from the 2 year mark, and would just love to know what to expect (aside, of course, from increase in length)!! What changes has anyone noticed beyond this point? I'd love to hear of any little (or large) details!!! :)

Okay so I cant be the only one with a tub of pretty much untouched wax, and Ive been trying to think of other uses for it. (Apologies if this thread has been done before.)

1. Grease my squeaky door hinges

2. Give it to someone I dont like to dread their hair with

DISCLAIMER: I wouldnt push wax usage on anyone, an Im actually a lovely gal ;) lol

Any others?

Okay...after much thought and resolving myself to the fact that I won't be able to brush my hair, I'm seriously considering having my hair dreaded...

My hair tangles quite easily, anyhow...it's medium wavy and is down to about 2 inches below my bra strap...I'm wondering how much length I'm gonna lose...my hair has never been this long and I do tribal style belly dance, plus fire fingers...

How much of a problem am I gonna have if I go the dreadie route? And is there anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area that wouldn't charge me a small fortune to have it done?

hey all,

stumbled across this site the other day and thought I would share it with you. It teaches you how to make those peyote stitch sleeves for your dreadlocks. They even have a online pattern creator so you can do your own patterns and customise them just for you. I had a go at it and it seems easy enough.

Hey, I have short-ish hair, I have never busted out the ruler and actually measured but I would say my hair is about 3 or 4 inches long, usually my hair is about 6 inches but I just got it cut. I really would like to have dreads, my question is do short dreads look good? I can't find any examples of a guy with short dreads, I would prefer thin locks. I figured I would do the dreads myself, get my sister or mother to help make them, but I do not want to go to a salon to get them. Any recommendations on products that are good for someone who plans on doing it themself? Also, what is the best way to do it? I do not think I want freeform because I was told that freeform takes a year or more and during that time looks terrible. So anyone got anything I can go on?

ALmost all of them have little loops all over. I understand taht dreads arent supposed to be perfect...but it seems like all of them are loopy!
What have I done?

is this something that will go away as they tighten?

Is there something I can do to make them smooth out?

I'm in the process of getting dreadlocks by backcombing and only a little wax here and there, but I've been thinking about what products are going to help the process along. Has anyone tried the dread butta? Is it any good? Also, can it be used alongside KB gel? I've heard the gel dries dreads out, but the butta is meant to do the opposite so could it be used to cancel that out (while letting the gel still work)?

has anyone tried SUPERHIPPIE.COM's dreadlock shampoo?

i have been using Dreadhead hq's shampoo since i started my dreads 7 months ago. I would like to try something different. I stumbled across www.superhippie.com the other day. Anyone tried it? Also, and suggestions of what i should be using? I tried Dr. Bronners (love that shit, use it for EVERYTHING) recently for my hair, and i think my dreads might not be ready for it yet. they feel a little looser... maybe this is just in my head?

Ok so I'm set on getting dreads.
However, I'd like to have thick locks,
maybe about the size of a nickel.
So how do I go about this? Do I
just make the backcombing square
area larger? If so, how large should
it be made? Thanks!

So my twin brother left his flat iron out and I used it on the roots and the tips of my dreads.. And you know as a temporary quick fix it worked amazingly well. My question is how bad is this for my hair? Is there a way to make these effects more permanent?
Also I shampoo with neutragina anti residue formula is this as good as the dread shampoo?
(I have trouble justifying spending thirty bucks on it)

Hello everyone,

First off, I would really love to have thick dreadlocks and am currently
growing out my hair. My hair gets pretty curly when it grows out so the
locking up should be easier. However, my mom, and some friends
have advised me against getting dreads because of fear from employers
taking one look at me and obviously seeing that I am not the average joe.
I was wondering if any of you have experienced any prejudice against
your hair style as if it were like tattoos in nature.

Now that my dreads are getting longer, I'm getting lazier and just can't make myself wash 'em as often as they probably need. It's so nice to just hop in the shower, scrub my body and hop back out in about 10 mins as opposed to a 1/2 hour + that it takes when I have to wash the babies...plus the drying time.

How often do you lather up?

I was at an Umphrey's Mcgee concert the other night and was approached by a fellow dreadhead and told that I wasn't properly caring for my dreads! (he was pretty drunk too). He told me the best thing to do is the rip and tear method. All I've been doing is palm rolling and root rubbing. Should I be doing more? I feel like some parts of my dreads are looking a lot better than other parts.. It'll be dreaded nice- then no dread at all- then back to dread near the bottom. I guess I'm just worried there not going to turn out nice! Oh- and they're about 2 and a 1/2 months old.

Does it wash out completely? Do you have to wrap 24/7 or just in dust storms? etc. etc.
Any info would help:)

Can anyone share a good recipe for a dread accelerator?

Hey all! I had my dreads put in yesterday, so I decided it was time to stop lurking and introduce myself :) I'm totally excited and slightly terrified of this new hair adventure. I've waited for a long time to have hair long enough to dread... now if i can just keep it together long enough to let my new baby dreads lock up, I'll be so happy!

The loctitan who did my hair did a unique combination of backcombing and crocheting tiny, tiny knots all down the length of each dread. That was it -- no waxes, no product, and everything is tight and knotty so far. It's looking pretty crazy and it's sooo hard to sleep on, but i think i'm starting on the right track. Does anyone here have any tips on helping it lock up? Does anyone have a recipe they're tried for a lock accelerator with which they've had a good experience?

Thanks for any responses, happy to join such an awesome community!

Ok so. I was an idiot and followed a friends advice and now I read and heard elsewhere that I f**ked up badd.
allright, this is the second time i've dreaded my hair, and the first time i did the same thing and now i understand why my roots never locked,
I left the rubberbands on!
i just took them off and now im freaking out because my roots are not dreaded at ALL.
i mean, given i've only had them in for about a month, but im still very panicky.
ive tried to do the clockwise rubbing stuff, but that just seems to loosen them even more.
and when i palmroll the actual dread, it seems go losen it also.
i have wispy ends, which i dont mind.
but all in all, they seem to be a mess.
i want to just leave them alone and let them figure it out for themselves, but i dont want to end up a few months down with nasty looking knots.
i spray them with salt water daily, and i put some hairspray on the ends, but not on the roots, because it creates small white flakes, and i deffinetly dont need that.
i dont use alot of wax, because ive made my own philosophy on that. some people adore it, some people hate it. i use it to keep the frizzies down.
i also straighten them sometimes because they get kinda curly..
im so scared!

I decided a while back that I would stop combing my hair, and wash it far less frequently. I wanted to take a more natural approach to my hair: Dreads weren't exactly my intent (although I must admit, I was aware that my hair would mat). I embraced my dreading hair, and I feel its coming along nicely (it may not look pretty, but I'm not exactly going for pretty). It's hard to calculate how long it's been dreading because it happened gradually, but its somewhere around 5-6 months and shoulder length.

Being natural is all well and good, but I also want my hair to be healthy. I've done some research, and I've found nothing but contradictions. How often to wash and with what: how to dry your hair: what to avoid and what to use. My goal was to have as little impact on my hair as possible, while still maintaining healthiness (and not looking like a complete shleb). Any suggestions?

I'm two months into the dreading process, and I've got a lot of hair in the back that has simply come loose from the dreads. It's driving me crazy and it's the only real issue I'm having with them. Should I wait until they've locked more and then crochet the loose pieces in? Should I go ahead and do it now? Is this really going to cause me problems?

I found this product mango and lime LOcking gel at a rasta store near where i live. it says on the jar "for difficult to lock hair" and "extra hold." the ingredients are.. deionized water, carbomer 940, essence of mango and lame, gum leaf extract, budgeum extract, cactus blossom extract, silk protein, wheat germ, shea butter, aloe, passion fruit extract, sea grape extract, natural perservatives, fragrance. i have straight caucasian hair and im not sure if this product is helping my dreads or hurting. i feel like it helps them stick but i have heard that in the begining it is not good to use shea butter because it could cause knots to slip out. my dreads are now a month and a half. if you have any advice thanks alot!

What style and color works for men?

Hello All,

I am wondering what styles would look good on a man and should I color the tips. I'm aware of a few sites but mostly contain female buns and wraps, however nothing for men. I dont mind low pony tails or rockin them straight out but could you help me with something new and fresh. Something fun for the weekends and something neat for work. I get bored putting them back in a band and just want something to standout a bit. Also what do you think about colored tips....is that old? If you think coloring the tips is ok what colors would work for me?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

In comparison with undreaded hair, how long does it take to gain length?

It seems like my dreads aren't growing. It makes sense that growth would take longer to see, but does anyone have a comparison? If your hair grew 6 inches a year pre-dreads, would it be about half that with dreads? It's only been 8 months, so I need to be patient... While I love the baby dreads, I look forward to long lovely locks. Peace.

Hey there folks! Well I have a question I'm hoping ya'll can help me out with. What are some fun styles, tricks to do with dreads? I know it's hard to put into words. My dreadies are thin for the most part and drop just below my shoulders/upper back. I have a "real job" of sorts (substitute teacher) and am looking for different ways to wear them. Thanks all and have a good one!

so i washed most of my wax out last night ( could not get it all out) and love the new feel of my dreads! so much lighter and not so greasy and nasty like. cider vinger worked well and salt water and lemon juice is great for tighten the dreads. I will try again in a few weeks to get the rest of the wax out. So now i will need to try work what to do with the frizz!

worried my dreads will fall out! hope i can bring them round

hey so i am a newbie to dreads and have read a whole load of threads on here.
I just had my dreads put 5 days ago my hair is about 8 to 10 inches long and the dreads are as thick as my little finger, before my hair was dreaded it was natural frizzy and if left for a week i could not get a hair brush though it. anyway i am very confused i do not now if the girl who did my dreads did them right ( sounds like common problems that i am having) the roots do not seem very tight ( more than an inch)and when they did them they used a lot of bees wax but they look good but hate the wax feel

I really want to have great looking dreads but I am worried when i wash them they will fall apart with no wax. I want to wash them tomorrow and get rid of all the waz, i have bought apple cider vinger and plan to soak them in that and then wash them in real hot water with plain soap. rapped in the end of a tight.

then i was planning to use a sea salt and lemon juice mix to lock the dreads up along with clockwise rolling and parm rolling?

am i on the right track?
cheers antony

I love dreads and Ive finally got mine back. Only a couple of weeks old but already Im feeling a bit 'meh' about it all - all the conflicting advice about what to do, the time to do it and then my immense fear of getting headlice! *Shudder* I have 2 children and my eldest goes to nursery one morning a week, increasing a little soon and Im convinced he'll bring some home to me! Ive read a thread on here with various suggestions etc and I have a question from something I read - if you have lice and sort the problem out without having to cut your dreads off, what happens with all the dead buggies?! They just stay in the dread forever? I think Id puke. Id certainly never sleep again!

Dreadlocks are lovely.
Dreadlocks are nice.
But things do get ugly
when a kid gives you lice.

There's no hope. Vinegar doesn't do shit.

Well, guys... I'm cutting off my dreads.
It's been good catching all the great advice here on Dreadtribe. It all started off so well...

How do you get the bottom part by the scalp to dread after it has grown? i did a looping technique please read and feed back!!

I have had my dreads in for about4 months now. and they are looking fine.
the bottom part by the scalp has grown and it is not dreaded.
i asked a hairstyler and he showed me a technique wich is taking the bottom part by the scapl making a whole then taking the dread and looping it through that whole then pulling it .
It does eliminate the undreaded part but it looks kinda weird .
it had someone do it to all my dreads andknow their is noundreaded hair but it looks tooo separated!! and it made my hair shorter!
does any one use this technique?
is theyre a better way of doing it?
Please feed back on this. Thank you. Peace and love to all you!!

Permanent Extensions

I have permanently extensioned my hair, heres how,,I had some yarn that matched my hair color,(black),,I cut the yarn into 3 inch strands, then pulled apart the fibers, and made a fluff, note :: the yarn i used was not wool,I think wool gives me the itchies,so I decided to use synthetic yarn,,it's better, cuz when you wash it,it dries alot quicker than wool, and is very light weight for your head, the water just quickly drips off the dread,,,anyhow,,i had alot of fluff,,i palm rolled long dreads, then,,I sewed the thing so it would stay together, causing the dread to look kinda bumpy,,i left some fluff on the end of the dread where I would attach it to my head,so,I then dreaded my own hair,,using the back comb method ,,and twist and rip,,(gently) then i sewed my own dread to a uniform roundness, that was the same width as the synthetic lock i made, then i overlapped the two un attached dreads, and i pletheraed them together using my fingers,,and holding this shape,,i very carefully started sewing them to gether, and there you go,,I cast of my thread, and had a perfectly long, natural looking dread, they look like they are well matured,i love the method i came up with, after lots of reaserch, and plenty of dreadlock picture veiwing,I want to extend this service,,so if any one is kickin around vermont, and wants this done to there, hair,,or if you need dread matenance,,or want just instantly locked natural dreads ,without synthetic's I am your girl

My dreads are almost 3 years old and getting pretty long. I had ALOT of hair to begin with and now have a hard time even getting the super sized rubber bands around them.
I need some suggestions on keeping them off my neck. I have too much hair to use a regular hair clip or clips and while pulling them back with a scarf, gives me some relief, they are still hanging down and very hot.
I would love some ideas on how to keep them piled up on top of my head.
Thanks!

Got a question for any of you that may have done the back and forth with dreads over the years...

My fiance just cut off his dreads last week after having them for quite a while...they were anywhere from a foot to 18 inches long...they were starting to make his neck hurt almost constantly and with the heat and humidity in Brissie, he said he just couldn't stand it anymore...

The problem is...now he's having headaches...I know that I've heard of people having headaches after a drastic haircut...especially when they take it all the way down...and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this...? The neck aches, heaviness and sweltering were bad enough...but he didn't exactly want to trade it all for daily headaches!!!

New to dreads, new to here.

Hi, my name is Kath and I am new to dreadlocks - my babies are 24 days old today! I am also new to this tribe and thought i would say hi and ask for some advice.

I decided to go ahead and fulfil a dream I have had for a long time - i decided to get dreads. So, i decided to do them myself using the backcombing method. I ended up using knottyboy wax to help with the process and since then, have read many comments about wax, I have since stopped using the wax.

Currently I am spending well in excess of 10 hours a week maintaining my babies. I am not using any products other than a recipe for a homemade locking accelerator that i stumbled across which i only use once a week anyway (lemon juice, water, seasalt, rosemary and tea tree oil)

The past week however, I have lost around an inch and a half of length. This is good isn't it? I really dont know what to expect over the next few months, so any tips and/or advice would be much appreciated. Also if anyone could let me know just how they are looking for their age - I would be ever so greatful.

Thanks.

There are two spots on my head where my dreads really want to join with one another. I am not against it in any way, and was wondering how I could encourage them to grow together. They are very young, just over a month old. Should I just stick some rubber bands on the tips and roots and palm roll em together for a while? Any thoughts?
Peace and Love.

I would like to dread naturally my hair is about four in a half inches now . My question is can I let it do its own thing and then seperate them later as they nap ? My hair is wavy and crazy since I always have to wear a hat since a work outside in the cold most days. It has already started to nap and I help it by doing the clockwise rubbing I have read you guys talk about . I don't want to use and chemicals and i'm in it for the long haul with lots of patience . Any help would be nice Thanks

Searching for a Loctician in the Baltimore, MD area (straight hair).

I have been researching much about dreadlocks--processes, products, dos and donts--but have yet to find information about the hair of my fellow Asians (I'm Chinese). I have long bone straight, coarse hair and am wondering how dreading long black asian hair compares to curlier hair? I would like to talk to someone in person and see if they can start me off in the right direction. I would like to start them off right with a loctician so that maintenance questions can be remedied customized to my hairs' needs.

Please feel free to comment on my hair type so that I can gauge the type and amount of maintenance required for clean, uniform, and kept locs.

Thanks!

Wet Dreadlocks

this may seem like a stupid question but I want to know about drying dreadlocks. I have read that dreadlocks smell when moisture is trapped inside (eg. people who wax their dreads when they are still wet/damp) but will my hair smell if i allow it to dry naturally in its own time during the day. I am trying the all natural approach with no waxes or bought products. But should I be worried that my hair is staying wet/damp for too long? Would it be better to dry immediately with a hair dryer? My dreads are only short and on the thin side but i just dont want dog-smelling dreads.

Today is my dreads' 2nd birthday. That's right two years. Two years of nattiness, dankness, and random stares. I have been all over the country with them from California to Colorado to Florida. Job permitting I hope to keep them for 2 more years. Peace

Has anyone else checked out the book called "Dreads", with the foreword by Alice Walker?

It shows pictures of people with dreads (and their reasons for having them) from all over the world. Even though it could be about 3x longer, it gives a nice glimpse..

http://www.amazon.com/Dreads-Francesco-Mastalia/dp/157965150X

It was published about 9 or 10 years ago, so I suspect this may be wayyy old news to some people.. to everyone else, I hope u enjoy it like I have! :D

PS. If anyone knows of any good books similar to this one, plz let me know!

I just got dreads last saturday. They looked awesome for the first two days but now they are getting super fuzzy (as in a huge amount of loose hairs) at the roots. In the middle of the dread they are locking pretty well, but then again on the ends they are falling out.
I have been palmrolling madly but it doesnt seem to help since they are so thin.
I have noticed that some people try "crocheting" them, but I have no idea what that is.
Any tips on getting rid of the loose hairs? I hear wax isn't good and I've only used it once. Does Lock Peppa work at all?

new dreads itchy, waxy & crocheted through roots :(

Hi guys,

I got my dreads on friday last week - 7 hours of hell! But it's finally done. I'd like to say I'm happy with them, but.... I have to keep them tied up, as they're still very waxy and VERY itchy, it's driving me nuts, I can't even sleep properly. I'm desperate to wash my scalp, and when I wear them down they stick out and generally look a bit of a mess. I know, I know, it takes patience, and it's only the 5th day I've had them, but I think I'm going to have to give my scalp a rinse later because I can't stop myself scratching and it's getting sore!! I guess I'm a little worried that mine still feel/look kinda unpleasant, considering some people's seem to look amazing right away... I mean, my hair was quite long when I had it done (it reached the bottom of my boobs) and the hairdresser used more than a whole 4oz tub of knotty boy wax!!
The other thing I'm worried about is that she backcombed my dreadlocks but then crocheted them through the root on each one, and then a few times along the length of each... I've been reading that you're not meant to crochet through the root because it won't lock properly or something?! And I'm going to have knots in them forever...?!

ARGH!!!

I guess I'm looking for some advice or maybe just some friendly comments to cheer me up?? *sigh* -_-

Thanks x

I'm planning on redreading my hair very shortly so i was wondering if it would be okay to just maybe get one of them head band thingy's that cover my ears and just leave my dreads out as i rip down the mountain side?

Hi! I have just gotten my dreads done and had a few questions. Is their any way to control the frizz? At the moment they are extremely frizzy and not so managable. I know that it will happen just as a part of the process, but i wondered if their was a way to minimize it. Also, how tight do they need to initially? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

So my dreads are about a week and half old. I've already showered once, but I had put a nylon over my dreads to help keep them from coming apart at the roots. I was wondering if I should still go with a nylon while I'm showering. It's a bit difficult to actually wash some of my dreads with the nylon on, and I was wondering how everyone else washes theirs.

I have had my dreads for a few weeks now. I like them a lot, but take some getting used to. They demand a ton of maintenance work.

What's the weirdest though, is how screwed up people are in their views of 'people who have dreads'

- People have moved to other tables
- I get looks as if I have the plague. Or lice.
- My personal hygene is suddenly questioned and suddenly "ok" to talk about openly (???)
- I am asked if I can get people drugs

I knew I would get a few "looks" but this is across the board, nearly Everyone reacts poorly.

Silly because I know I wash my dreads more than they wash their hair.

I need to make a shirt that says "Yes, I wash daily. No, I will not sell drugs"

Does anybody have any positive or negative feedback on hot oil treatments for dreads? I am constantly buying new hair products and came across this product called Ojon Restotative Hair treatment which is a deep conditioning treatment and the first ingredient is Elaeis Oleifera (American Palm Oil) No wax is present on the ingredient list so do you think this will leave a build up similar to wax? I am also considering putting coconut oil in my dreads as an experiment before I spend $55 on the Ojon product. Let me know what you dreadies have experienced. Blessings

Help combing them out!

I have thought for a while on this, and I have decided to attempt to comb out my dreads. I am sure that I will try them again some time later in the future, but they aren't working well for me right now.

Anybody that has combed them out, what did you use? I have heard that olive oil works the best. I will be chopping most of my hair off after I get them out, but would love any advice on how to go about it.

Pleaase and thank you!

Crispy, dry!

I have had my dreads just over a year now, and they are so crisp and dry that I can't stand the touch of them. I used to dye them bright red, so I undersand that my hair is quite damaged. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to use to soften them up.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!
